LIJ Birthing Tubs
I remember someone on here posting they went on a tour of the Katz LIJ center and that the birthing tubs were pointed out. I did not know that LIJ put in birthing tubs. I just wanted to confirm this was true and see if anyone knew any midwives who deliver at LIJ using these tubs or OBGYN practices that are very natural birth friendly that use them?
Anyone here use them for their birth? I used Stony Brook Midwives for the birth of my DS, but would love to go somewhere a lot closer if/when i get pregnant again.
Thanks for any info!

Re: LIJ Birthing Tubs
As far as I know, the only hospital on LI that has birthing tubs is Nassau Medical Center.

Yes, this. My *guess* is that you might be allowed to labor in the tub (if you are unmedicated, no complications etc.) but not give birth in it.

LIJ Birthing Tubs
Interesting distinction... a labor tub vs a birthing tub. I don't really see the point of being able to labor in a tub if the staff and my practicioner are not very natural birth friendly overall. Unfortunately with my son, i had miconium so i was hooked up to constant monitoring and wasn't able to have the birth experience i wanted. But i can still dream for #2! :)

LIJ Birthing Tubs
I was the one who went on the tour at LIJ recently. They told us there are 2 tubs that we can use if we are trying to have a natural birth to help with the pain. They said you have to tell the nurses right away when you check in and if they are available they will let you use them, if you qualify. I'm not sure what the qualifications are but they said once you get medication you cannot go into the tubs. She said it is a first come, first serve basis.

Re: LIJ Birthing Tubs
There are no midwives in LIJ.
Winthrop has two labor tubs, and Melanie Sumersille from Garden City OBGYN is the only midwife there.

And you are not allowed to birth in the tub at Winthrop. Only to labor. And you have to ask for it.
Melanie is fabulous.

LIJ Birthing Tubs
LIJ has two rooms with tubs, but they are not birthing tubs. if you get a room with a tub (which is first come first serve by request) you are allowed to relax in a bath. im pretty sure you can only use the tub if you water has not yet broken...this is at least my recollection from when i took my hospital tour 5 months ago..but my memory could be wrong
