Bar Harbor, Maine
Has anyone ever been? We are going to Maine for the first time, we have never been this far north and are looking for things to do (besides Acadia and shopping) Any ideas? Thank you :)

Re: Bar Harbor, Maine
My siblings and I stayed in a cabin on a lake in Maine two summers ago and I have been in love ever since!!! Its is one of the most gorgeous places I have ever been....Bar Harbor is a nice day of shopping, wine/beer tasting, and relaxation. Acadia is GORGEOUS!! We just hung out at the lake otherwise, the guys went golfing, girls watched the kids but it was GREAT!! We found a hole in the wall lobster place which was FABULOUS!! Overall we were content just chilling with a fire pit each night...
its beautiful!!
Enjoy! :)

It couldn't agree more.
It ended up being one of my favorite places that I've been to in the United States. The town, the people, the food, the whole experience was just fantastic. It is breathtaking and a great place in the dead of summer to visit b/c it doesn't get that sticky, drop dead heat that it does here. We did whale watching there which I have to add to the above items of things to definitely check out. Also, if you like duck, make sure you try some of their duck at any of the good restaurants there -- many people rave about their lobster, which they are known for and it is great, but they are also very well known for having fantastic duck and that was a highlight for me! We also did the tour of Acadia - it was on a bus type of setting with a guide, you would think it would be just a standard tour but WOW the information, the history behind the park, and the stories they tell - it was great!
The only other thing I have to kind of "warn" you about: the drive. Just be prepared, it is worth it, BUT it is a long one. It's not even so much from here to Maine - that was somewhat easy. It's just once I saw the "Welcome to Maine" sign on the highway I thought, cool, we are almost there. WRONG. To my dismay, it was still several hours from entering Maine to get to Bar Harbor. Maybe you could find a different route but we took the most common one - I think if I had to do it over, and I plan on visiting again b/c it was wonderful, I would do a ferry from Orient to CT and then go straight from there up - along the coast - if that's possible, check it out, because you end up closer to where Bar Harbor is (on the coast) rather than driving off the Island and then straight up, into Maine, only to hook a big right and haul it to the coast. I want to say it was something like five or so hours to Maine, we were like amen! And then it was like another FREAKING FOUR HOURS to get to Bar Harbor. That is what killed me.
So, if I had to do it over again, I would just plan a different route -- even if I went a little out of my way, more scenic along the coast and more direct -- or involving the cost of the ferry - to me, would be worth it. Very worth it.
We also looked into taking Amtrak. Since you really don't need your car there. I liked the idea of doing Amtrak - stopping in Boston, maybe another city or too - like Cape Cod or Rhode Island or Martha's Vineyard?? And then hitting Bar Harbor. Oh! And if you can go all the way up into Canada that's gorgeous too. We did Bar Harbor and Quebec in the same trip - BH first and then Quebec. Nova Scotia is also beautiful.
Anyway, hope that helps!
