Can someone explain to me how pregnancy and insurance works?

Maybe I'm a little late about this but I'm so confused.

So I have been going for my prenatal appointments/tests/sonograms and all that is routine and is covered by insurance, right? So what do I need to get pre-certification for and when do I need to tell them? Are they any tests etc. during pregnancy that need to be approved in advance? Or is just that I need to tell them that I will be going into the hospital to deliver? Is there anything else I need to check or make sure of?

I grew up in the land of universal healthcare and though I have been able to navigate the waters here pretty well, this is the first hospitalization I will have and I want to make sure we don't get slammed by a huge bill that I can't argue with.

Re: Can someone explain to me how pregnancy and insurance works?

It really depends on your insurance. However, this is how mine works.

Once I go for the first appt, they realize all my appointments are for pregnancy.

My doctor gave me a form to fill out and send to the hospital for per-registration. My insurance required that I get per-authorized, but they sent me a letter shortly after my first few appointments telling me that they were authorizing the stay at the hospital.

So, call your insurance company, just give them a heads up about your due date and what hospital you'll be staying at-if they need that info.

I had to preregister with my insurance company, so I would call and make sure you do or don't have to, then I had to register with the hospital I was going to deliver

Pre-register for what? For delivery? Or for your prenatal visits?

I also had to get pre authorization for my delivery. I let them know my due date... and if it was a planned c section or not. Then they authorized me for X amount of nights covered..

ETA my OB had the pre-registration forms for the hospital

My OB's office called my insurance company to let them know I was expecting and they sent me a confirmation number to give to the hospital. My OB's office provided me the hospital registration form which I filled out and mailed back for each pregnancy and the hospital lost both times.

Re: Can someone explain to me how pregnancy and insurance works?

Thanks all. For some reason out of nowhere I got concerned that I needed to get preauthorized for all my prenatal visits, but I'm fairly certain now that is not the case.

Next question - how is the baby covered in the hospital?

Call your insurance company after the baby is born, they will prob have you fill out forms.. I know mine required a birth certificate within a certain amount of days so I had to pretty much stay on top of the town registrar office since I didn't receive the birth certificate for a while. (apparently the month my DS was born they had hundreds of birth certificate applications and they were backlogged).

It really depends on your insurance. We're in a union so I called my union hall to ask them about this with the insurance and how it worked and then I called my insurance company to double check (because I realized the people at the union hall are not the sharpest knives).

I was told for our insurance the doctors office has to call for pre-certification for delivery. All my other visits are ok. I have to pay a copay for all prenatal appointments until 12 weeks and then everything after that I don't have to pay. I have to pay a copay for ALL sonograms. I had to pay the delivery copay to the doctor's office for my doctor 60 days prior to my due date (which I think is stupid but that's the way Women for Women works).

Once our LO is born he will be covered under me. When I get his birth certificate and social security card I have to send a copy to our union hall with DH's social security number and they will add LO on but they said that usually takes about 2 weeks to get and not to worry about it.

Call your insurance company. Since all insurance companies are different you might want to hear it straight from them so you don't have to worry about any of it.

The baby was automatically covered for the first 30 days of life. After we got the social security card/birth cert we officially added her to our plan, but we didn't have to do anything in the hospital.

I got a call one day from my insurance company telling me that my hospital stay was approved. I didn't even know I applied for something! Guess the doctor's office knew what to submit in my name

Can someone explain to me how pregnancy and insurance works?

I just started to see my OB and my insurance was billed for sono, exams, blood work. I got a pre-regi form for hospital from my Dr, I sent it in. My insurance sent me a confirmation of my info & due date... thats it. All I have to do is call UHC when my baby is born. I did make sure Hospital was in Network w/my ins. UHC has called me to get an update on my health. Easy.

I didn't even think to call about asking if I need pre-authorization for hospitalization. Thanks for posting about this!

Re: Can someone explain to me how pregnancy and insurance works?

My OB office told me to call my insurance company and tell them that I was PG and the due date, hospital, etc. When I called they told me I didn't have to call, they did not need all that info. I guess every insurance co is different.
We have Empire NYSHIP and I did call to ask about adding LO on to the insurance and they told me all we had to do was call after she was born to give them the name and date of birth. A few days later we got her insurance card.
