Anyone who colors their hair red-advice on formula

I've only just decided to start doing permanent, single process and the first time I tried it at the salon the formula was not a good match for my natural color. All I need is to color the grey that is starting to come in. I've never been a fire engine redhead. I need something natural looking. If any of you have had success do you know what formula you've been using (#wise). I think I need something in the red brown family rather than R/O. The R/Os seem a little too intense to me. That's what we tried this past time. I usually go the Paul Mitchell Cactus Academy so they're all inexperienced. They are not too much help when it comes to mixing up the right shades. They can apply it but I may need to come up with my own combo. Thanks!

ETA: they told me I'm about a level 7 if that helps in terms of what colors I can choose that will work.

Also are you sure you really want red and not a light golden brown or Auburn? Something with a hint of red.

That IS probably what I need. Hint of red I guess.
