Weight Gain

Hey Everyone!
So I am just about 27 weeks. I currently go to the stony brook midwives and I love them! Anyway so at my appt I was told they only want me to gain 20 pounds not 30. She said I should be gaining 1/2 pound a week. Well in 4 weeks I gained 3. I exercise, eat right, drink water and rarely indulge. Let me just say that I was a normal weight when I get pregnant that number seems low to me. How is your weight gain going? What did your docs recommend?

My weight gain has been all over the place but that's because I lost 12 lbs in the beginning from thowing up and then didn't start gaining until after 20 weeks because I wasn't really eating as much as I was supposed to.

I'm 33 weeks and have gained 25 lbs. They told me I was doing fine. My sister is an OB and she said the same thing your midwives said, 20 lbs for 40 weeks since you should gain 1/2 lb a week but she said it's not exact. I told her my goal was to gain 25 but if I go to 35 I won't kill myself over it. I didn't start out super skinny but I wore a size 6 or 8 so I would consider that normal. She told me that was fine.

If you are doing everything you could possibly do then don't worry too much about it. Seems like you have it under control. Unless your doctor is giving you a really hard time then don't worry about it. Remember it's a 1/2 lb a week for 40 weeks but for the first few months are you really gaining that much?

Re: Weight Gain

It's interesting to see what all of the different medical professionals say. My docs said 25-35 lbs. My sister (also an OBGYN) said the same. I am at 38 weeks and have gained 40lbs. I started out underweight so knew that I would be gaining more than the average. I also gained 37lbs of that in the first 24 weeks! Everybody gains differently and gains what it needs. I was SO distraught over this at the beginning but I just kept being active and eating well and my docs are just fine with where I am now.

I think sometimes doctors/midwives forget that each person is different and spend too much time focusing on the "average" weights in textbooks! Hang in there!

ETA: 38 weeks! Not 28! woops!

20 lbs seems extremely low for someone who wasn't overweight to begin with. Honestly i would ignore it, or get a second opinion.

This exactly. I'm 25wks and up close to 30lbs. I just saw my ob yesterday and was shocked when he didn't say anything so I actually brought it up and asked if he was at all concerned. He wasn't at all! I was thin to start and my body is gaining what it needs. I may healthy choices, though since my pregnancy is so high risk I am not allowed to do any exercise. I have a feeling by the end I'll be up at least 40lbs but the baby is doing great, over 2 weeks ago I was going into preterm labor but today I am still pregnant and doing well, and quite frankly that's all that matters!

... really? Who were you seeing that day? Which office do you go to?

I was definitely told 25-35 but 'everyone is different'.

I go to the Setauket office on Tech drive and I've seen all the midwives there now and I ask every single appt like a freakshow if my weight is okay.

Re: Weight Gain

I think that # sounds very low!! 20 pounds for the whole pregnancy? I can't imagine anyone meeting that guideline, I would ignore their advice. My doctor hasn't said 1 word about weight or how much I should gain. I'm 26 weeks and up about 19 pounds.

I go to the same office and was told the same...25-35.

Weight Gain

I prob had 15 extra lbs on me to begin with, but my OB said 20-30 lbs would be ok for me. I'll be 27 wks tomorrow and I've gained 9 lbs so far. I'm guessing I'll prob hit 25 lbs by the end.

Re: Weight Gain

I've gained almost 40lbs about just over 34 weeks. I gained 46 with my son so I guess i'm gaining about the same this time around. I've brought up my weight to my doctor a few times and she always acts like its no big deal and even seems annoyed with me for being concerned with my weight. Honestly at this point I feel huge and would love it if I didn't gain another pound during this pregnancy but that probably won't happen.

Weight Gain

I gained over 40 and my dr didn't mention it once. IMO I'd changed drs if the were putting a number on it from the beginning.

Weight gain doesn't determine a healthy pregnancy.

Re: Weight Gain

20 lbs seems really low for an entire pregnancy unless a person was overweight to begin with. At 28 weeks I've gained 17 pounds & my doctor was saying I should gain another 10 or so until the end. I tend to gain in spurts, all at once, then nothing for a while. My doctor said 20-50 pounds is considered a normal range. I don't think you should feel like to have to keep it to only 20.

My dr told me the optimal weight gain was 25lbs but it varies by person and it's just a ballpark figure

Re: Weight Gain

I have gained a ton! Don't know the exact number at this point but probably looking at about 40 and I am 32 weeks. I gained a total of 56 with DD and lost 53 of it. The most I gained in amonth I think was 8. My doc always brings it up and then ends with saying - your healthy, baby is healthy so no worries. It will just be harder for me to loose it Chat Icon

Re: Weight Gain

I'm 31 weeks and I've gained about 25 lbs. My doctor hasn't said anything, so other then dreading losing the weight I really haven't been torturing myself.

Re: Weight Gain

My doc told me he'd like to see me gain 30lbs thought.

At 20w I was up about 10lbs. Everything I've read says it should be an additional lb p/week from now on which will bring be up to 30 by my due date.

BUT, like everyone said, each person is different. IMO, as long as you and the baby are at "healthy weights", and healthy in all other areas, I wouldn't be too concerned either way.

Re: Weight Gain

That is a low amount to gain although its not unhealthy...its just odd they would tell you to only gain 20! I understand when someone is very overweight but you aren't. My doc said 30-35 was a good goal for me (i gained 42 with each boy and am heading in the same direction again, lol). I'm not concerned in the least!! I take it off rather quickly...babies are always healthy. Don't sweat it and just do what you're doing!
