If u are/were being treated for preterm labor but NOT with procardia

What did you take?

It's a long story, me and baby are fine, but not sure I will be able to continue taking procardia. I'm just wondering what my options are. I'll be speaking to my dr more on Monday but just curious what others have done.

ETA: I'm 24wks if that matters... So really looking to hear from people who had to treat it more longer term than just a few weeks.

I'm on 17p injections to prevent preterm labor since I have a history of it.

17p is progesterone in oil but a much higher dose and a visiting nurse comes to inject.

i took indocen (only for a couple of days but it really helped ) and i was on strict bedrest. That was for DS1. This time around I'm getting the cerclage. I don't know how serious your situatio is but at 24 weeks I'm pretty sure you can still get an emergency cerclage

An incompetent cervix and preterm labor are different issues. A cerclage should be used if there is an incompetent cervix, not preterm labor. We figured out my cervix is likely not a problem, so we are treating the symptoms of preterm labor with meds. The med I'm on that I may not be able to take will depend on what my cardiologist says. It's a long story.... I'm actually on indocin as well, but I know that can't be taken for long stretches of time. Did you take it once and that was all you needed?

I thought that by definition preterm labor was "uterine contractions of sufficient frequency and intensity to effect progressive effacement and dilation of the cervix ?" If the cervix isn't dilating then aren't the contractions at that point false labor/irritable uterus or braxton hicks? I had these from 17 weeks along that could be picked up on the monitor but never had any cervical change till 36 weeks (then stayed at 3cm dilated till I went to 41 weeks when I delivered) so my doctor was never concerned. Anyway just something you might want to check with your doc, maybe you don't need to be on the medication that would interfere with your underlying cardiac issuesChat Icon Good luck!

Oh no I definitely need the meds lol. I'm so fortunate my perinatologist picked up on this before it became a 'real' problem! Preterm labor and IC are not the same even though many doctors treat it as the same issue. Chat Icon

Thanks ladies for your responses, I decided I'll just wait and see what my doctor says tomorrow about my options.

I'm taking this as well, I'm a nurse in the hospital where my OB is, so i go to the office every week, and get my injection.
i took them with my son as well, but i injected them myself, since i was on bed rest.

Cerclage, and pre-term labor are 2 different things. I have an IC, which i got a cerclage for, but i did not have pre-term labor. However i did take the 17p injections, my entire pregnancy, so could be why. You can have pre-term labor with no cervical changes.

I had an IC due to pre-term labor. My Dr told me that your cervix begins to shorten/open bc of contractions. Since I was contracting so frequently and intensly early on, I then got an IC. I did take indocen for preterm labor originally. Sorry for the confusion!!!
