Being Induced

So, with all this talk recently about refusing to be induced I'm wondering what the dangers and/or risks associated with it.

This is my first LO and I have no clue about this. I had a friend who was induced and the pitocin was given too early and as a result her contractions stopped and she ended up in labor for 30 hours with her first.

Any info would be great. (Although it's going to make me anxious when the time comes at least I'll be more informed).

Being Induced

i was induced because of low fluid.

My induction is really not the norm, Cervadil was all i needed and thats usually just to soften the cervix... she was born less than 12 hrs after it was put it...

Contractions were ridiculously intense and they came on out of nowhere, i went from 1cm to 10cm in about 5ish hours.

Re: Being Induced

My opinion is that unless there's a reasonable medical reason for doing so....if your pregnancy is a Norma. Low risk pregnancy it's best to let the baby come on its own time. Your due date could be wrong, etc so inducing at the due date or before could actually mean your baby is early... And you want to avoid that if possible?

A lot of first time pregnancies go past the due date.

I don't want to overwhelm you with my reasons for wanting to avoid induction but... You can find them very early by googling. I find inducing to be the start of a chain reaction that causes multiple interventions to become necessary and frequently end up resulting in what many would consider an unnecessary c section.

Personal choice obviously but if you have the desire to have a normal vaginal birth... I'd read up on this.

Eta ... Everyone here is going to have a different opinion in this. And there ARE a variety of perfectly legit reasons to be induced.

Re: Being Induced

Drugs like Pitocin can be very stressful for the baby. It can affect their heart rate and breathing. Once your water breaks, the risk of infection for you and the baby increases. Inductions also increase your risk of c-sections, which have their own set of risks.

Being induced for a medical reason is TOTALLY different than inducing for convenience. If you're induced for a real medical reason (pre-e, low fluid, placenta issues, etc) the benefits of getting the baby out outweigh the risks.

Oh, I would read up on this but I've had bad experiences googling pregnancy/birth related health things. I had an anxiety attack in the past when I read too far ahead on my "What to Expect when Expecting" App lol.

Re: Being Induced

I was induced due to GD. I believe that's a valid, medical reason for an induction. I also believe she wasn't ready to come out/my body wasn't ready to deliver her. I had a c/s. Would I have wound up with a c/s anyway? Who knows! But I have no regrets - it was the best course of action given all of the facts and circumstances, and that's what matters.

Re: Being Induced

I had GD and expressed my concerns about being induced. As long as I was being monitored and everything was ok I didn't see the need for it. Thank God she came 3 weeks early

My thoughts exactly, except that I was induced for low fluid. They used pitocin, and I ended up with a C/S.

At the end of the day, all I cared about was what was best/safest for DD.

Being Induced

My biggest gripe with induction is if its done for convienence. If you read my post my dr offered it to me bc its just easier. That isn't a good reason for me. Plus if your body isn't ready it could lead to an emergency c-section which it did for 5 people I know. If my dr tells me its medically necessary bc my fluid is too low or my placenta has deteriorated I will be all give me pitocin but I'm not bring told oh its just easier. What part if this whole process is easy.

Being Induced

I was induced because I was 41w1d and DS was not descending. Even though they gave me Cervadil and later Pitocin, they pretty much expected from the point I walked in that I'd need a c-section. In my gut -- even though my pregnancy was so easy -- I always knw it would end that way.

I have to admit I'm not great with advocating for myself and I tend to just accept what the doctors say as gospel without questioning it (trying to get better about this). I didn't want a C-section but I also saw how DS' heartrate dropped every time I had a contraction and so I didn't want to risk anything happening to him.

Re: Being Induced

I was induced at 41 weeks with my 1st because there was no indication he was coming out anytime soon. I probably could have gone another week, but I didn't.

I had pitocin in the morning, and delivered him vaginally at 11:16 that night with no issues. I just needed a jump start.

Re: Being Induced

I was induced with my DS, i went 5 days past my due date. I was in labor for 12 hours. Start to finish. No complications during labor. IMO im for inducing, and if i go past my due date with this baby then i will have the doctor induce me.

Re: Being Induced

My SIL (who is a doctor) asked for an induction at 41 weeks because she was super uncomfy and there had been no change in weeks. She had a quick labor - process started at about 6am and baby was here by 2pm. My nephew is doing great!

I will likely end up induced because of my high blood pressure and cardiac history. I am okay with that as long as I can at least try to deliver vaginally, provided it is safe for the baby.

Being Induced

My induction was unsuccessful ~ was offered a c-section but I declined & went home........my daughter was born 10 days later WITHOUT being induced. Best decision I've ever made.

Re: Being Induced

i was induced at 40w5d. started with cervadil and that did the trick, a few hours later my water broke and contractions came on strong. Unfortunately I ended up in labor for 22 hours because I didn't progress quickly. It took overnight for me to get to 8cm and then I wasnt 10cm until about 4pm. I pushed for about 45 min. Baby was never under any stress and we were both healthy. I tore a lot down there but that has nothing to do with the induction.
