Changing Ins Q; IUI before IVF - update at bottom
My insurance is changing; the new carrier has the "lesser before greater treatment" rule - meaning you have to do IUI before they approve IVF. I ran into this last year with my old carrier and ended up having to do 3 clomid IUIs and 3 injectible IUIs before being approved for IVF.
My question is: will i be required to do the 6 IUIs before they approve IVF again, or will my previus IUIs count? I called the new carrier but being i'm not officially on the plan yet they couldnt tell me anything.
Has anyone had experience with this?? i know all insurance plans are different, but was hoping somebody went through something similar and would be willing to share.
Also - my new carrier is UHC Oxford - anyone have any good/bad experiences with them?

I would think that the previous IUI's would count since that just means you need IVF.

Your previous IUIs should count, your doctor would just need to show proof of medical necessity for IVF and show the documented IUIs.
Good luck! When we got approved for IVF it was a big night in my house  My dh and I celebrated!

IVFmiracle - i'll let you know when i find out...hopefully will know in a few weeks after my insurance changes.

I did NOT have to go through IUIs before getting approved for IVF and my max started over again.
still working through the typical pains of insurance companies though...that part didnt go away! lol

Cool.
What was the process like?
Insurance said - "You need to do IUI"
you said - "I did"
Insurance said - "show us proof from the doctor"
you faxed a letter from the doctor
Insurance said - "Ok, you can do IVF now"
or did they not care and didn't even mention IUI at all ?

when I called up their infertility management line and got assigned a nurse case manager. I explained everything to her and she said no way would they make me go through IUI first. So, when my RE put in the approval request for my IVF i assumed that they had to provide previous cycle sheets in. There was no issue (that i know of) and was approved right away.
