Testing baby for Rh-/+?

I am Rh- and DH is Rh+, I had the Rhogam shot with my last pregnant and miscarriage.

The nurse mentioned something to me about testing the baby's blood NOW (I am almost 15 weeks) to see if the baby is - or + and then deciding if I should get the Rhogam shot.

Has anyone ever heard of this??

Re: Testing baby for Rh-/+?

i have something similar, but its not Rh factor, its another antigen in the blood (called E). DH is positive for this antigen, I am negative. Similar except there is no shot in our case.

I would just get the shot. OR, do amnio and know for sure but even in that case, I think they would just give you the shot and monitor, no?

We opted NOT to do amnio. Instead we had weekly MCA (middle cerebral artery) scans for anemia and I had to have my blood titred to look for increased antibodies which meant that more than likely, the baby was effected.

In the end, there were NO issues, Grace was negative like me (we did the blood test after she was born).

This is the most common form of Isoimmunization. Check out babycenter.com and search the ISO (isoimmunization) board. Maybe 900 members worldwide. The most information that I have been able to find anywhere!!! Even more than most doctors can offer Chat Icon

Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks!

I feel like at this point, I would just get the shot too. My friend JUST gave birth and this was never offered to her so I feel like its brand new? I don't want to chance it and the shot - as far as I can tell - has no side effects. Just thought it was strange.

I'm RH - and DH is RH +. I just had my blood work done again and had my shot (I'm 31 weeks on Friday). When I asked what the blood test was for, they told me it was to check if there were antibodies forming yet. I asked if they could check the blood type now and they said no they will do that after he is born and then decide if I need another shot.

Honestly, if it's not the common and no one has really heard of it, I would just get the shot. I'm not for experimenting with my son and since the shot doesn't hurt and it's really no big deal I'd rather stick with that.

I just got the shot. Noone ever mentioned anything about the baby's blood being tested until after he was born. It was determined then that he and I were a match so I didn't require the second shot.

Ive been searching and this is NOWHERE. And you know what, the OB never mentioned it - maybe the nurse was confused?

Thanks for answering!
