Re: Public schools
You might want to check out some websites that rate the schools and provide a lot of stats (on class sizes, test scores, demographics, etc.), as well as parental reviews. Examples would be www.greatschools.org or www.schooldigger.com. Also, the Newsday school rankings offer very specific statistical information (test scores, graduation rates, % going on to 4 year colleges, etc.).
People's opinions and perceptions about which school districts are "good" can vary based on what a person considers good and what they are prioritizing (size of district, academics, athletics, arts, full-day kindergarten, before/after care, special ed programs, honors/AP classes offered, etc.). So I think when the question about "good schools' is posed very generally, the discussion sometimes goes a bit off track and becomes less productive for the original poster.
If you offer up some specific criteria you are looking for, and also a price range of homes you would consider (since you said you are looking for more affordable than Garden City or Great Neck), and in what areas (Nassau, Suffolk, north/south, etc.), people can give you some suggestions!
And I am always happy to answer questions from a real estate perspective!
