Can someone explain midwifery to me?

I made an appointment at stonybrook GYNOB, and plan on delivering at stonybrook. But I'm confused about midwives... What exactly do they do? Do you have a midwife in lieu of an OB?

Thanks!

They provide obstetrical care, gynecological care. You would have a midwife in lieu of an OB. They have much lower rates of interventions than most OBs,

Re: Can someone explain midwifery to me?

Here are a few articles that should help explain the benefits:

article 1

article 2

FWIW, I used midwives for both my pregnancies and was very happy with them. I prefer the low-intervention MW approach to birth.

Won't induce labor w/o a medical reason, lower incidences of using pitocin, fewer requests for epidurals, lower rates of cutting episotomies, and that's just the stuff I can think of off the top of my head.

Also lower C-section rates, too.

I am using the Stony Brook Midwives and couldn't be happier. I love the office, I love their approach and I love their philosophies.

It may not be for everyone, but I suggest going to a Meet the Midwives night at the hospital to get more info.

Is it your first time using them? I am debating checking them out after my ob/gyn told me he won't do allow me to attempt at VBAC.

Yes, this is my first baby. I can't imagine they wouldn't be pro-VBAC provided there's no extenuating circumstances. They're very much into allowing the body to take its time to labor and progress, not just speed it up and send you on your way, unless it's medically needed to intervene.

Midwives are very pro-VBAC in general. What I like about midwives is they will do everything in their power to give you an intervention free birth, and if it led to a C-section at least you KNOW it was needed, kwim? Also, people have this misconception that midwife automatically means no epidural-not true! I know many people who had epidurals with a midwife and still had low intervention births.

I also use SB midwives and loooove them.

If you are going to use them to deliver your baby then you don't need an OB. Their wing at the hospital is attached to a hall where everyone else has their babies via an OB. The OB on call will be available to you should you need them.

As the other girls have said -- they have a more personalized philosophy towards child birth. They are super supportive of natural birth and have extremely low C-section rates.

They have less patients so I think you get more attention.

All types of pain medication relief is still available to you should you choose to have it -- but if you want them to help you get you through a natural child birth then they are for sure the way to go.

There's also a much lower chance you'll be induced before your body tells you it's ready to go.

(They also do regular well women gyn care so you can hang with them after the birth -- I have been a patient of theirs for about two years now and knew I'd want to use them when it came time for prenatal care.

Also as PP mentioned -- anyone considering using them should try to attend Meet the Midwives night. You can ask any questions you have (and hear other people ask theirs) -- they'll go over the general idea of what they do and meet them all.

You also get to tour their section at the hospital. They encourage you to move about while you labor there and the shower to labor in... the rooms are private. They are very supportive of doulas coming in to help if you wish. But they also can guide you through many types of positions for delivering in etc. so you can do whatever is going to be easiest for you!!

The practice I go to has midwives and one OB. You meet all throughout your pregnancy, midwives comes to your birth UNLESS you *need* a section.

I'm very conflicted as to what to do! My sis used a midwife and loved her... So I'm leaning toward that but I already made an appt with stonybrook gynob which so comes highly recommended. So many decisions already!

Do what you feel comfortable with. I made it VERY clear to my OB what I wanted and didn't want. I had a completely natural, no intervention birth. Just know YOU are in charge and even if your OB suggests something you have to be your own advocate, ask questions, and you can absolutely say no to anything they recommend.
