If you plan on EBF'ing...
Are you buying any formula just in case? I don't know what to do here.
I REALLY want to EBF, but I know there's always a chance that I might not be able to.
Should I have a formula back up? If so, what formula?!

If there is a reason to give formula in the hospital, they will most likely send you home with whatever they used.

I was given a few single serving packets of Enfamil in my hospital gift bag and I was able to get a sample pack of ready made Enfamil from the pediatrician at DSs first office visit at 4 days old. Turned out I never needed any of it. See if you can get some samples just in case and then take it from there.

My friend told me to ask for RTF formula in the hospital...just in case. It should be given, but if not ask them for it and state you are worried that you might need it if breast feeding doesn't work...

I did and I am so glad I did. My daughter is almost 4 weeks old and I am BF'ing but there were two instances where we had serious difficulty and I am so glad I had RTF formula on hand so that I did not lose my mind.

Definitely ask for it. I planned on EBF DD and didn't want to take the formula, but the nurses pushed me to. I took it, but didn't want to give it to her. When we got home DD had latch problems and we took her to a LC and the LC sent DH out right then to go buy formula bc she said DD was starving. She learned to latch eventually and I was able to pump most of the milk she needed until she mastered it, but we still needed to supplement. The most important thing is that you feed your baby, so there is no harm in having the RTF formula in the house just in case. And if you don't need it you can always donate it or find someone on here who will take it.

Re: If you plan on EBF'ing...
I'm torn on this- I bf ds exclusive until 6 weeks, hit a growth spurt and I think that *I* wimped out and used formula (although I still partially bf for 11.5 months) only because it was there in my house (they gave it to us in the hospital)
My gf said dont have it in the house next time so its not an option and bf has to work.. but that scares me too
So yea, not sure what I am going to do this time

No. I feel like it will tempt me to give up if its in the house. We have a 24-hour Walgreens about 4 seconds away, so is not a big deal if we need to run out and get it one day.

Never did with DS. Not sure what I am going to do it this time since there are two. I'm really worried about EBF twins.

Re: If you plan on EBF'ing...
I wouldn't have formula in the house if you want to EBF. At 3am it would be too easy for me to "cave." You probably won't need it though. Almost all boobs work; only something like 3% of women physically can't breastfeed. Under Obamacare, LCs and pump rentals are covered under most insurance plans, so if you run into trouble, you won't have to pay OOP for assistance.

I had tons of samples in my house and wish I never did bc it made me give up on our difficult journey so much easier.

I also had a bunch of samples. Just sign up through the major companies and they will send you stuff.

I EBF for about 4 months or so. I started adding formula in around that time because my milk supply started drying up after I returned to work (I was struggling to find time to pump every 3 hours consistently).
The day after he was born, I definitely gave him bottles the hospital had because both he and I were struggling majorly with BFing that day (didn't have problems the first day or night or after that really).
When we did start using formula, we used Enfamil -- the powdered kind which his ped. recommended. I don't think we had it in the house until we absolutely needed it though.

Definitely ask at the hospital but I would also sign up for emfamil and you'll get a free newborn powder tin. Put your due date down a little earlier then actual so you get the formula before the baby is born. Of course you can always go get some but when the baby is eating every 2 hours and you are exhausted the last thing you are going to want is to have to wait for someone to run out and have the baby scream for 10 minutes. The baby may not latch well or maybe you won't have enough milk right away (which was my experience)...so there were nights she got an ounce it so after breast feeding just to fill her up. dd is now 8 weeks and we almost ebf and have been for weeks) now I have a ton of milk (once in a blue she gets an ounce of formula bc my mom watches her and occasionally she's still hungry after her bottle and my mom needs to give her something to fill her up).

Nope. We'll go get it if the baby needs it.
