Registering if not having a shower? (anyone can respond but Jewish mamas in particular)
Register. People are going to buy you stuff and it might as well be stuff you actually want/need. Otherwise people get creative and that leads to a box in your closet of stuff you can't use and don't know where to return it. Plus you get a discount on whatever is left.

Jewperstitious - love it!
I am Jewish and did not plan on having a shower but at 22 weeks we registered anyway. It's not only a way for you to keep organized but its very true that people give gifts and better they give you something you need/want instead of what they pick out. If you don't register you'll end up with lots of clothing and stuffed animals and will spent a ton of time returning.

Registering if not having a shower? (anyone can respond but Jewish mamas in particular)
I'm Jewish but am having a shower (after much arguing with my mom and a lot of her family isn't coming because they don't believe in it). If I didn't have a shower I would probably still register for the reasons you stated above. I would want it to keep track of what I need since pregnancy brain is CRAZY and after baby is born it will be even harder to concentrate.
Also, registering itself is not like asking for gifts. You aren't going to register and then putting it on FB where everyone can go shop or sending out little cards, you are only telling those that ask if you are registered and what they can get you. I find no harm in this AT ALL.

I am Jewish and had a shower. If someone is superstitious wouldn't that include a registry? Creating a registry and having a party are both declarations of an impending birth. There is no Jewish law against showers.

Registering if not having a shower? (anyone can respond but Jewish mamas in particular)
I'm Jewish. Registered and not having a shower. People have bought a handful of things and I never told them where we were registered. People do ask but I mostly did it for a checklist for us and for when the baby comes. Once the baby is here you're not going to go to the store for allllll the stuff you need or first register then. It's only asking for gifts if you solicit them and make it a point to say where you are registered.

I had a shower, but my mom insisted on keeping everything in her house until the baby was born. I would definitely register. SIL didn't have a shower, but registered and got a lot of items from her registry as gifts.

A registry in itself is not asking for gifts... It's stating what gifts you'd like to get if people want to buy them.
It's asking for gifts if you tell people where youregistered without being asked about it.

There are no laws, hence why I said superstitious. The superstition is about having items for the baby in the home prior to the baby's birth, or opening gifts prior to the baby's birth. If we registered we would send things to my ILs house and get them after the baby is born. Everyone has different levels of comfort - this is how I was raised and what feels okay to me. If it made total and complete sense it probably wouldn't be a superstition, KWIM?
If I do register it will not be unti many weeks down the road - much closer to the baby's arrival, likely the beginning of the 3rd trimester.
Thanks everyone!

I am having number 2 and not having a shower, or sprinkle, and I have two registries. I use it to keep track of what I need to buy, discounts offered, and then the completion coupon. I don't see it as asking for gifts.
Same here.
