How did you tell your parents?

This is our first baby and although DH's parents are already grandparents, I'd like to tell everyone our great news in a special way.

Especially my mom and dad because I'm very close with both of them and it'll be their first grandchild. Only catch is my dad lives in FL, we even thought about just eating the cost and hopping on a plane for a day to tell him in person Chat Icon

We're just so excited and we know everyone will be surprised since we pulled the "we're not having kids for a LONG TIME" card and no one has really bothered us about it every since we got married so I want to get creative...

So - please share the special way you told your parents they're going to be grandparents!!

How did you tell your parents?

with dd, I found out 12/28/10. we went to my parents' house with a gift wrapped in christmas paper and told them I ordered them something for christmas but it just arrived. they unwrapped the picture frame that had a lucky 7s scratch off (their 7th grandchild) in it and a note that said "hi grandma and papa. I can't wait to meet you. see you in september. we did something similar for mil as well.

Re: How did you tell your parents?

For my mom I said I wanted to show her something and then gave her our sono picture. She looked at it and said she knew what it was but didn't know how it applied to her. When we told her I was pregnant she flipped! We had always told her we weren't having children either and since we have been married for 7 years everyone just assumed the no kids thing was for real.
My in-laws are out of state so we called them and told them over the phone.

Re: How did you tell your parents?

we told my parents on Christmas eve. I found out of my pregnancy a couple of days after thanksgiving but I really wanted to wait until Christmas. It was hard to hold it in but worth it. We bought then an ornament of snowman couple with both our names and mine had a belly that had an arrow pointing down saying BABY. In the bottom it said We are Expecting

How did you tell your parents?

I used the sonogram picture from the first doctor's appointment and put it in a frame. It was bi-fold - the other side said Miracle and there was a poem about how they can't wait to meet LO.

Actually here it is: http://www.decoruniverse.com/products/view.aspx?sku=9772071&af=1528&cse=1528&gclid=COL8yOXTwrYCFQFx4Aod5lEAVg

I'm still trying to think of a cute way to tell them about #2 but I am really trying very hard to wait until Mother's Day to do it when I'll be about 10 weeks!

Re: How did you tell your parents?

for DH's parents it was their first grandchild and we have a little Pomeranian that my MIL just loves and spoils. We bought her a shirt that says "I'm going to be a big sister!" and we brought her over one day and just let her walk around until my MIL noticed the shirt. It was quite comical the reactions that ensued after.

For my parents, It's their second grandchild, so I pretended I had just gone shopping and saw something I thought my mom would like and picked it up. I put a sonogram picture in a special frame and wrote "Baby ____ Due May 25, 2013" and when my mom pulled it out she started crying. It was very sweet.

Re: How did you tell your parents?

With my first DS for my parents we told them right after I had been on a business trip to London. I brought my laptop and asked them if they'd like to see some pics from my trip. The last pic was a scan of the sonogram. It took them a few second, but they finally got it.

With my inlaws we told them on Thanksgiving and brought them each a wrapped up bib that said "I love Grandma/Grandpa". We just said it was a little Thanksgiving present.

This time we told my family on Easter. We have an easter egg hunt. So we hid a piece of paper in one of the eggs that said "Read out loud, Ryan's going to be a big brother". And waited for one of the kids to read it. Everyone was confused at first and then happy.

For my MIL this time we just put DS in a Big Brother shirt and brought him to lunch in it. She noticed right away and of course started crying.

Re: How did you tell your parents?

We found out that I was pregnant as soon as I got back from a vacation to Mexico - DH and I were waiting for me to get my period on vacation and I was so bummed about it coming, but it never came. (Needless to say I was thrilled b/c of no AF on vaca) So, on the way home I was like that is so odd. (We had been trying to get pregnant for over a year and a half so I NEVER thought that I could actually be pregnant - just thought it was delayed). Even when I took the test, I took like three more because I didn't believe it. I went to my OB the next day to confirm, still in disbelief. Anyway, so we found out, and once my OB confirmed it we decided to tell our parents with a little gift.

I went to Babies-R-Us, you could go to any cute baby store, and I bought them each two bibs -- one said "I love my Grandma" and the other said "I love my Grandpa" -- we gave two bibs, in a gift bag, to each set of parents. They were thrilled and very surprised. I think they thought it was a little gift from our vacation or something! It was really nice.

You could do the same thing with siblings - we just told my brother, sister, and SIL but it's a cute idea to do that with them also. We should have probably "i-phoned" the surprise, meaning video it to have it on record but we just enjoyed it in the moment. It was nice.

Re: How did you tell your parents?

I found a really cute poem on the internet that I made a scroll out of with a ribbon around it. I had them read that first. Then there was a picture frame I got from Kohl's that said, "coming soon" and I put a picture of my first sono in there.

This is the poem:

I do not have a face to see,
Or put inside a frame.
I do not have soft cheeks to kiss,
I don't yet have a name.
You can't yet hold my tiny hands,
Nor whisper in my ear.
It's still too soon to sing a song,
Or cuddle me so near.
But all will change come ________,
That's when the say I'm due.
I'm your new grandson or granddaughter,
I can't wait till I meet you.
All I ask between now and then,
Is your patience while I grow.
I promise I'll be worth the wait,
Because of all the love we'll know.
So what I have to give you now,
is a wish to you from me.
I cannot wait to be a part
Of this wonderful family.

Re: How did you tell your parents?

My parents live in Alaska so I called and told them....it was cute...my mom has always told me she had better be the first to know....so I made sure to tell her first! Then I called my brother and SIL, also in AK. Then the next day we visited MIL with our puppy and let him tell her, same thing with BIL and SIL, It was funny because SIL didn't even read the t-shirt, she just knew....started screaming and crying in disbelief!! it was super cute!

Re: How did you tell your parents?

I told my parents and my grandmother at the same time. I told them on Christmas Eve. I got them a Grandparent card and a Great Grandmother card. Inside the card was a message written from the baby along with a photo of me and my Dh with Santa Clause with Santa holding a note saying " We got our Christmas Miracle" Both my parents and Grandmother were over Joyed. My grandmother actually started crying!!!! I was only 4 weeks when we told them..I did not have my first sono yet otherwise that would of been in the card!

Re: How did you tell your parents?

#1 we had both sets of parents over for dinner and gave the grandma's gift bags with onesies inside that said "Baby _____ Due Feb. 2011" and caught it all on video.

#2 we had both sets of parents, my brother, and DH's grandmother over for dinner and put a "Big Sister" shirt on DD and waited for everyone to notice. We caught this on video too.

However you do it, try to get it on video. Watching it back is as fun as telling them!!

How did you tell your parents?

We told my parents we had an early anniversary present for them and to come up to the apt (they were picking us up for something). I gave them each a gift bag that had t-shirts in them with "Best Bubby" and "I'm going to be the 'cool' Grandpa". My mom said she knew but my dad was SUPER surprised and seemed really excited!

With my in-laws we had this whole dinner planned out and was going to give them the last bottle of wine from our gift basket from our bridal shower (each bottle was supposed to be opened on special occasions and the last one we had was for first baby). The plan was to give it to FIL and have him read it out loud. Because of Sandy they ended up moving in with us for a few days and I was so sick (I had to go to the ER one night) it didn't work out that way. We just told MIL the night we went to the ER since she was coming with us. We told FIL the next night because he had been working crazy hours since he works for Con Ed. Not exactly how we wanted to tell them but since I was so sick we didn't have much of a choice.

I agree, get it on video. I wish we did!! Can you skype with your dad? Or Facetime?
