Flood in Apt...mold question
Yesterday we had a flood in our apt. A hose came off the washing machine and water just kept going everywhere. The washing machine is next to the kitchen and hooked up to the kitchen sink. It's a ventless, washer/dryer combo system. I am almost 29 weeks pregnant and couldn't find the valve to get the water to turn off. Thankfully my dad came over and helped me but it was too late. The water went from the kitchen to the dining room to the entry way to the living room. It didn't hit the bedroom or the nursery THANK GOODNESS!!!
Maintenance came and it seems as though they got up all the water within an hour of the water being turned off. We are however worried about mold. I'm scared that water got under the cabinets and mold with start to grow. I am going today to get a dehumidifier but is it too late? When will mold start to grow? We plan on calling a mold inspector (if anyone has anyone that would be helpful too) but I don't want to call too soon but I also don't want mold growing in my apartment for weeks because I waited to call.
We are just hoping that we have minimal damage to the apt. Our insurance covers our personal objects but it doesn't cover the apt, so if the cabinets need to be replaced that's out of pocket and with the baby on the way we are trying to not spend that kind of money.
If you read this LONG post, thank you! Any help would be appreciated so that we can put this behind us and focus on the good that is coming in a couple months!

Do you have fans going to dry everything? A friend had a similar problem and her insurance brought over industrial strength fans to dry everything and so far she's been ok.

Run the dehumidifer 24/7 until the bucket doesn't fill up anymore. And like PP said, fans are good too. Moving air helps prevent mold growth too. Mold loves wet, dark, non-windy places... so do whatever you can to make mold miserable LOL
See how the cabinets are when they completely dry out. Hopefully they will still be good. If anything, maybe it's a project you can push off for a while if they're still useable, but just a little warped.
