Vermont or Maine
DH and I are thinking of maybe renting a house on the beach in one of these two states for a week during the summer and driving up to Montreal one day. A couple of questions...
1. Does anyone have any specific recommendations for a town? We'd love a place that also has some historical and cultural attractions nearby. We also really love ghost tours...I noticed that Burlington has quite a few.
2. About how long does it take to get a passport? I don't have one and would obviously need one.
Thanks!
Edited b/c I re-read this and realized that I should not type after drinking multiple glasses of wine

Re: Vermont or Maine
I just saw this deal earlier today on jetsetter.com: Kennebunkport Cottages I wish I could take advantage of this! I just don't have the time for it at the moment. Maybe its what you're looking for? Passports...I think mine took about 3-4 weeks.

Both are great options.
I love Maine, we always go to Ogunquit for a long weekend in the summer - the beach is gorgeous. You should look at Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, Old Orchard Beach - these are less than an hour away from Portland so you can get your cultural fix there!

If you go to Vermont you should consider staying on lake Champlain. It is beautiful. I like Cholchester point. It is close to Burlington. DH is from Vermont and we rent a place on the lake every August.

Re: Vermont or Maine
We are doing a week in Maine ( Bar Harbor, acadia national park) in August. just FYI...pick something now. We had no less than 4 houses snatched out from under us while deciding, and a good 60% of the ones we wanted were booked all summer already.
We were torn between The Kennebunkport/Ogunquit/wells area and Bar Harbor. We choose Bar harbor b/c we are doing a beach vacation already and this more outdoors/hiking/ mountain/lake type of thing. But both areas are amazing from what I can see.
I know you can take a Ferry from The Bar Harbor area to Canada, I believe they said its a 2 and 1/2 hr trip but I am not 100% sure on that.

Re: Vermont or Maine
the southern coast of Maine is a good 5 hour drive or more from Montreal. I think Vermont would be a lot closer if you stayed on the lake. Im not sure what the lakes beaches are like.
ETA: the above poster mentioned the ferry from Bar Harbor - this goes to Nova Scotia.
