Now DS is humming at night instead of sleeping....what's the deal?

Lately DS has been waking more often at night- 10pm and then every 2-4 hours after that. I used to be able to feed him and he'd go back to sleep. Now I put him down and he stays awake whining and humming. Is he teething? Does he have gas? I ended up rocking him in the glider early this morning so he would actually fall asleep....no one is getting too much sleep. Any advice would be appreciated.

ETA: DS is 5 1/2 months

How old is he? Could definitely be teething. DD just turned 12 months. Her bottom molar has been working its way through for a week and she's been waking up around 5 every morning and will whine on and off until she wakes up around 8.

I'd say as long as he's not sick and is ok try to let him work it out. When DD was sick she got into the habit of me coming in to pick her up and console her. It was terrible. I started to let her learn to work it out on her own. As long as she was ok on the monitor I let her whine or cry it out. She realized I wasn't coming in anymore and self soothes much better now. It's probably just a phase but could definitely be the teeth. I'm sure it's so painful for them.

Dd is the same age and doing the same thing. I think it's teething. It happened a few weeks ago right before her first two teeth broke through and then she went back to sleeping better. But now for the past couple nights she's been back to waking up a lot more during the night again. So I'm thinking maybe her next pair of teeth are working their way in.

Dd got her two bottom teeth at about five months and 3 weeks. The week before they popped through she was whining a lot!

It could be his way of self soothing. I'd leave him as long as he isn't crying. My girls are the same age and get up for. 4:30 night feeding. They either talk to themselves or whine a little then go back to sleep.
