blood in saliva
Kind of gross, but I have excess saliva, so I went to the bathroom to spit and I noticed blood in it. I hadn't brushed my teeth recently and I don't see anywhere where anywhere in my mouth is bleeding. I think it has stopped now, but I am freaked out nonetheless. Anyone experience this? Do I call the OB? I don't taste blood or anything, when I blow my nose there is blood, but I attribute that to heat and pregnancy stuff

blood in saliva
I had the same thing happen to me. My gums towards the WAY back of my mouth on the top left were swollen and would bleed a little randomly so I would get a metallic taste in my mouth and there would be blood in my saliva... (sorry, gross I know). I went to the dentist and he said it was a normal part of pregnancy to have swollen gums and sometimes it can cause bleeding. The next time I saw my OB she said the same thing. The swelling went down and bleeding stopped (as well as the nose bleeds) basically as soon as I had the baby. It was like someone flipped a switch.

Re: blood in saliva
Thanks for the reply. I took a flashlight and checked and didn't see anything! It stopped now, but of course my throat feels itchy and dry, I love being pregnant and having an anxiety disorder :/

Re: blood in saliva
Gross but I had blood in my phlem one morning. I always wake up a little stuffy and mucusy and I spit and saw the blood and freaked out because "coughing up blood" is a sign of lung cancer which my grandparents just passed away from. I just went internet crazy, didn't call the doc or anything and saw a lot of post saying its normal. It happens when I blow my nose too but both only first thing in the morning. I still plan on asking the doc at my next appointment.

Re: blood in saliva
It can be from your nose-- the sinuses dry out during pregnancy and can cause bloody noses. Also, it can def be your gums. Pregnancy hormones cause a certain overgrowth of bacteria in your mouth which causes gums to puff up and bleed. Getting a cleaning in the second trimester is highly recommended bc there is a link to periodonal disease/bacteria and preterm birth. Many dentists are making it mandatory along with OB's.

My sinuses are incredibly dry and allergies are not helping. I wouldn't be concerned.

Re: blood in saliva
It can totally be coming from drainage from your nose. Im sure you're fine, try not to worry!

Re: blood in saliva
TMI but when I wake up in the morning and blow my nose, it's super bloody. I asked my OB about it and he said that bloody noses and some blood on your teeth/gums are a normal in pregnancy.
