RI in July with 9 month olds
We want to do 1 or 2 nights somewhere drivable and were thinking RI. Are there different areas of RI to stay or really just newport. And are they doable with 9 month olds? We are looking for little shops, places to eat etc. What about Pawtucket? Is that near newport?

When we do RI but don't want to go Newport, we always stay in Westerly. As for doing it with 9 months old, that's completely up to you. I found the beach tough at that age because they were putting sand in their mouths and it was just messy to get all the sand off. We always found the pool much easier.

We arent really beach people so we would probably just walk around, sightsee and shop.

Re: RI in July with 9 month olds
We rented a house in Niantic,CT last year and it was a great home base for us. It has a cute town with a children's museum, some shops and restaurants. And the biggest, best used book store I've ever seen! My sister and I were in heaven. We did a day trip to Mystic- about 20 minutes away. You could easily go to Westerly about 30 minutes away, and Newport would probably be about 45 minutes to an hour away.
