Ireland road trip!
Yes! Will be going around the country in a rental car, also making our way up to Northern Ireland for a day. Any advice or tips or must sees? Did anyone stay in a castle? Should we buy the rental car ins (pricey i think)? Will be there end of May
TIA

Re: Ireland road trip!
so fun!! we did this 2 years ago- one of my favorite trips ever!! We booked a trip through Aerlingus airlines (I'm not sure if they do them anymore though). it included 6 nights hotel and the rental car. The hotels were all pre-booked for us- so we knew where we would be each night and planned sightseeing from there. we had our first night in Dublin, then 2 nights in Cork/Kinsale, 2 nights in Limerick, and then our last night was back in dublin before we flew home. So pretty much a big circle. We saw the Powerscourt waterfall and the gardens, which i would recommend. we also did a lot of castles (Blarney Castle, Kilkenny Castle). The Cliffs of Moher were amazing to see- i would say they are a "must do". In Dublin you have to do the Guiness Tour- the bar at the end gives you really cool views of the city... I think buying the rental car insurance is mandatory there. The roads are really narrow and can be confusing- so i would also rent a GPS with it, too or take your own.

Re: Ireland road trip!
Couldn't agree more with the above post. Spring for the rental insurance- the "roads" are bananas in some areas! We went for a wedding and even though my FIL grew up there and has driven many a times, it was still hard for him. I also second the Cliffs of Moher! I'm also throwing in Croagh Patrick. It's a mountain with a little church at the top. It's a tough climb, about 3.5 miles and it's steep, but it's worth it. It's considered a religious pilgrimage by some- we actually saw a guy climbing barefoot.

Re: Ireland road trip!
This was my first trip with DH. Was such a great time! I'd suggest the Ring of Kerry (west coast). The views and scenery are like nothing else! I also recommend the Cliffs of Moher like the two pp. They were amazingly beautiful!

I knoooooow! It killed us to pay all the extra for the automatic, but we did it, too.

Re: Ireland road trip!
Definitely get the automatic and I think you have to get insurance.
It is hard for me to say what is a must because I was so in love I could've stayed.
If you can, go to Kylemore Abbey, it is stunning, near Connemara and a small town OUghterard - near Cong - which is where they really filmed The Quiet Man with John Wayne.
We spent most of our time on the west coast - Cliffs of Moher, The Burren Pass - stunning views.
Have a great time!
