UPDATED - Hysterical and Freaking Out...

Some of you might remember I got sent to L&D at Winthrop on Monday night and had a horrific experience with a resident there....

Today around noon I started leaking something. I don't know if it's just watery discharge or if its amniotic fluid. If it's amniotic fluid the leak is VERY SLOW. It's 6:25pm now and I haven't saturated a pad or anything. My panties are just kinda damp. I smelt it and it's not urine. I can also feel where it's coming from so I'm sure it's not pee.

Because it is coming out SO slowly, I figured I'll wait until morning and see if anything happens. I told DH, who told a co-worker and she said she thought I really need to call the doctor. The doctor is just down the street from my office and open until 8pm. Reluctantly, I called them. They called me back and told me to go back to L&D. I begged to come back to the office and not L&D and they said no, to go to the hospital. I called DH FREAKING OUT. I do NOT WANT TO GO TO L&D. He called the doctor's office back and basically asked if we could wait it out until the morning or if we could just come in. They said this is the protocol and that we could try waiting it out until the morning but that that is not advisable and they really think we need to go to L&D and that is their official recommendation.

I'm in total hysterics. I do not want to go back to L&D at all. Has anyone ever ignored their doctor's advice? It is a TINY amount of fluid. I am so upset and I realize I'm not rational. I don't know what to do.

Update: DH called my doctor's office and explained what was going on and that we really just wanted to come into the office. They insisted that I go to L&D and we did. The two nurses were so nice. The same resident from Monday was there and they kept her out of the room and away from me and they did not make me feel bad about it. Also, I guess my doctor's office called over the hospital where one of the members of their practice was on call and explained that I was freaking. He ended up telling the staff that he was going to be the one to examine me and everything. He did and what I was leaking was just cervical fluid - not amniotic fluid. I do not have a slow leak. I told him I felt bad and that I really didn't want to return to the hospital for nothing and to waste everyone's time. He reassured me that I should not feel bad at all and to treat it as if he invited me there. When the nurse came in to discharge me she also reassured me that I should not feel bad for having a problem with the resident and that I should always make sure to speak up about it. I guess that, even though there was nothing going on, this was probably a good thing because it made me feel better about the whole situation at the hospital and that I will ultimately deliver there. I also was happy about how my doctor's office handled it.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. Chat Icon

I would never risk not following the DR's orders. God forbid.

Go to a different hospital. Or ask to see the most senior DR you can.

Mr drs only have privileges at Winthrop. Would you go somewhere where they don't have privileges?

I delivered twice at Wintrop and had great experiences. Don't take any risks. I would head to l&d. As soon as you get there, tell your nurse your concerns and explain that you do NOT want a resident to examine you. It's your body--your say. I was there for monitoring once & my nurse was awful with the Iv. I told her I refused to let her try again. She went & got the Iv guru on the floor & it was in 1-2-3 Chat Icon Just advocate for yourself. And don't be scared--this is such an exciting time!!! Best of luck to you!!!

I agree with the above...I wouldn't risk what could be happening. There is a reason for the protocol. Just make sure you are an advocate for yourself. My friend delivered there twice and LOVED both times. Tell the nurse what you want and if they don't listen to you ask to speak to either a social worker or a patient rep, someone will be there and someone is there to listen to your concerns and fears.

Good luck and let us know how it all goes!

Im so sorry for what you have gone through, and how upset you areChat Icon . I agree, and think it would be a good idea to go to L&D, if you are leaking, and its amniotic fluid, they will want to check you. Based on your awful experience, as soon as you get there i would explain what happened, and refuse anyone but an attending. And if that resident is there refuse to see her.

I just wanted to send you some hugs. Please go to L & D and if anyone even thinks about getting nasty or doing something that hurts you please speak up. Another girl had posted asking for the most senior person on call, that they hafta give you that person, please ask for that up front. I am sure it will put your mind at ease. Good Luck!!Chat Icon

please go to L & d...if your waters broke, usually they want you to deliver within 24 hrs....just demand to see a dr, and hold your ground....dont allow a resident to mess with the safety of you and your baby by not going to the hospital

Best of luckChat Icon

Hysterical and Freaking Out...

I would just go to the hospital. Sounds like my old OB with DD; I was contracting 36 weeks and they insisted I go to L&D which I couldn't understand since the office was open until 8. Went to Winthrop and I was 3cm dilated so they did my csection 3 weeks early.

Hysterical and Freaking Out...

I would follow drs orders but don't patients have the right to deny being seen by residents? I would start there.

I agree with this. Unfortunately I was in the hospital with DD for almost a week a few months ago and I learned that you need to be very assertive and demand what you want. You are the customer and the patient and they need to make you happy. Stand up for yourself and don't let anyone treat you that you aren't comfortable with, no matter if it is a resident, nurse or doctor. Be an advocate for yourself.

Go to the hospital - the most important thing is your and your baby's health. Don't take any chances.

I honestly would go to the hospital. Not to scare you, but when my water broke, it started as a slow trickle. I didn't think much of it, but went to the dr. just to be safe, and after a litmus test came back positive for fluid, they sent me to the hospital to be induced. They want you to deliver within 24 hours in that case due to risk of infection to the baby. Good luck!

Re: Hysterical and Freaking Out...

No, you need to go. I was leaking fluid with my DD. They do not want you going more than 24 hrs like that, it could be dangerous.

ETA: saw your other post about sex bringing on labor, it was sex that made my fluid leak Chat Icon

Hysterical and Freaking Out...

You are putting your baby in danger if you are leaking fluid and wait too long. I'm not saying this to scare you. Just tryin to be honest.

You need to listen to your drs. And the pain of an internal is minimal compared to actual childbirth so I would be at the hospital the minute the dr told me to.

if you think your water broke, you HAVE to go to the hospital. however, you can ask for the senior doctor there or the dr on call from your practice. you do not have to consent to an exam by a resident.

UPDATED - Hysterical and Freaking Out...

So happy to hear your update. I was at winthrop a few weeks ago and had a resident examine me that I didn't really care for. I wish I remembered her name so I can request not to see her again when I'm there. Every other nurse I have seen there has been so amazing.
