Travel insurance

Was wondering how many of you take of travel insurance?

We have always taken it for our cruises, but are going on a land vacation soon and wondering if we should take it out.

Re: Travel insurance

Never. We pay for everything on our amex card and generally only pay for flights before hand. Hotels are usually paid for at the destination.

Re: Travel insurance

We never took out insurance. Until last year! My DH tore his bicep and needed surgery right before our annual trip. We had to cancel our car (no problem at all since we hadn't pre-paid), but our timeshare and the airfare were more of a hassle. Thank goodness after pleading my case and showing them the ER paperwork and surgery order they both refunded me the money to be used for a future trip. Ever since then I have started taking the insurance for both my timeshare and flights. I think it winds up being about an extra $130 all together.

Travel insurance

I take it on any trip of more than $1K, or something in the winter months where the chance my 5 yr old will get sick.

It depends on the trip. Cruises and disney yes, not for say a driving trip to washington dc or boston where you can cancel pretty much anytime or reschedule. Especially when you have kids you never know what might come up.

I never used to get it. Then I planned a trip to Disney and it was included in our package - and I actually had to use it due to a family emergency that caused us to have to cut our trip short. We were reimbursed for everything - the unused hotel nights, the change in flights, Disney tix etc. I was so happy to have it. Now I always get it.

Travel insurance

I usually don't but I did last year for our first AI trip. We went to Jamaica in September which is the height of hurricane season. We got it just to have a piece of mind.

I would get it again for AI trips but other trips I probably would not get it.

yes, we never used to but we do now. DH and I took a cruise the same week in March the past two years, and both years there was a death in the family right after we got back... so we figure if anything like that happened before a trip its better to be covered in case we had to cancel last minute.

I take out a yearly policy and I always end up making a claim...once we had to stay in Florida for an extra week because my son got chicken pox the day before we were leaving, the travel insurance covered n extra week in a hotel, rental car, food and travel back to the UK. It was well worth it. Never travel without it.

Re: Travel insurance

Mil passed away before our cruise. Thankfully we had insurance and didn't have to worry. I will always get insurance for big trips.

Re: Travel insurance

Honestly I used to never get it, thinking we're both young and heathy, but after 1) Hurricane Sandy and 2) My last flight being literally during a blizzard, I've changed my tune. I think if you have young children or lederly parents it's a no brainer, but the fact is anything can happen to anyone

I would get it. During hurricane irene in 2011, my trip was postponed because of flight cancellations. I didn't really have to use insurance since airlines offered free trip changes and cancellations but I realized you never know what happens.
