new puppy, when?
DH wants a dog so bad, but we were waiting until we close on our new house. Well luck has it that I am not 6weeks pregnant and we are closing next week. We are wondering when's the best time to get a new puppy? it's going to be a ton of work and I don't know if we should get one right away (will only be close to year when baby comes) or wait until after and let the puppy grow attached to the baby or what?
I should note that DH wants a big dog, german shepherd or doberman...

I'd wait until the baby is a toddler.
My Dh was the same way- he wanted a dog so bad. He started visiting shelters and bringing home pictures of sad dogs in cages- pulling at my heartstrings. I love dogs- but I knew we'd have our hands full (I was 13wks pg when we moved into our house).
We wound up getting our dog (a HUGE shepherd/hound mutt) when DD1 was almost 3 months old.
All the "I'll do everything for the dog!!" that DH promised quickly went out the window.
Almost 3 yrs later and I'm still not happy about it (and still the one feeding/cleaning up after the dog). He's lucky he's cute (the dog-not DH  ) and really good with the kids.
Make sure you're both willing to put in the work to take care of and train the dog.

Thanks this is a huge help...I feel like it will be a revolving cycle bc maybe when the LO is a toddler we'll be preggo again god willing.
how old was the dog when you brought him into the household? Im also worried about intorducing a dog with the new baby

The dog and DS are best buds. DS is 15months and Rocky is 3years. I would do it the same way if I had to do it again.
I would not worry about a big dog. Rocky is a Pit Mix but HUGE. I actually think big dogs do better with kids than small ones. I feel like small dogs nip.

I wish we got one before Dd was born. stbx kept giving me excuses why not to get one. Now Dd is 4 and wants one. I wish we got one so they can grow together. Not sure how she will handle it now. Especially if the puppy gets into her toys.

Move in, get settled, have the baby, and then decide on the dog.

This was my situation almost exactly.
When I was pregnant with our third child, DH began talking about getting a dog. I wasn't a fan, and kept saying "We'll see." When the baby was 8 weeks old, he brought home an 8 week old puppy from the shelter. It caused HUGE issues between us. He did nothing with the dog, I wanted to bring the dog back and he made me feel like a sh!tty human being because "They'll put him down if we bring him back!"
Almost four years later the dog and I are still not the best of friends but he's not a bad guy, he's good with the kids, and I guess it all worked out in the end. However, it is NOT the way I would recommend doing things. It caused a lot of hostility between DH and I, and it was just a lot to take care of all at once.

I agree! We have two dogs. They were about 8 and 4 years old when dd was born. We got each of them when they were only about 8 weeks old. The first year of having them was DIFFICULT and a ton of work. They are like having children. It is a big commitment. Oh and my dogs are little so I can only imagine a big dog to mean more work.

never seriously i afree with this and wait. Getting a house can be stressful enough then a new baby adding a dog to the mix to me is just crazy.
Plus really think about what you are commiting to. I love our dogs but once they pass away I refuse to get anymore.
I want to be able to just pick up and leave for a whole day without having to worry about who can i get to let the dogs out feed them etc. An overnight trip forget about it even more to have to worry about!
