Updating bathroom piece by piece?
Our bathroom is a little outdated with oak cabinets, medicine cabinet, shelves, and a formica countertop. The shelf in the medicine cabinet collapsed the other night so we need a new one.
I would love to get a more modern looking one instead of one another oak one but then it won't match. I'd like to do it little by little to save money but it'll probably look stupid right?
I'd get a white medicine cabinet and wall cabinet for now and someday down the road, redo the vanity when we have the money to do so.
So, stupid idea or genius?
Not sure if this makes a difference but it would be the same price to get the new medicine cabinet, regardless of the color.

can you maybe just get a new shelf? You can prob get a piece of glass for next to nothing
Or even paint what you do have to hold you over until you're ready with all the matching pieces?

The whole medicine cabinet needs to be replaced. The wood is all warped unfortunately. Maybe I can convince DH to paint the oak cabinets in the vanity white for now.

Do you have a budget in mind? Somethings you can do cheaply-would be to refinish the vanity. Paint it white or gel stain it if you want to go dark. You can get a medicine cabinet or mirror to match what you want the final color to be. I can tell you from personal experience that gel stain is so so easy to do and cost like 40$ in materials and we have left over stain! Now, if you want to change the tile/tub etc that is going to cost more money especially if you have someone else do the labor. But other easy fixes are change the shower curtain, get new towels, paint/panel the non-tiled walls. You should be able to update the look for under 500$.

My budget is cheap! The rest of the bathroom is perfect - my house is only 13 years old so the tub, floor tiles, and wall tiles (only in tub area) are not outdated at all. The only thing we would change is the vanity - counter top and bottom cabinets, medicine cabinet, and wall cabinet. The thing is that we have a double sink so I'm noticing that those cost a bit more money than a single sink vanity.

Have you looked at Habitat for Humanity's ReStore in Ronkonkoma? They sometimes have entire vanity for cheap.

If you don't find what you want at Habitat for Humanity, I say replace the medicine cabinet and wall cabinet for now and paint the vanity. At least it will all be the same color. This is what I plan to do as well.
