BTDT Moms - Car Seat Question
Do I need the infant seat and the convertible car seat? How long is the infant seat good for?

Re: BTDT Moms - Car Seat Question
Until your arm breaks.
I lasted about 7 months before my DD combined with the infant seat was just too heavy. At that point we moved her to the convertible carseat.
ETA - You don't NEED the infant seat but I recommend it. I found it so much easier than the convertible. I never had to disturb my DD when she was sleeping, it was just so easy. If it didn't get so heavy I would've stuck with it longer.

Right now, I only have the infant seat on my registry. I figured when I can't carry it anymore I'd just leave it in the car.
I have no idea why I am so confused by this .

Re: BTDT Moms - Car Seat Question
My friend who is a PA told me not to register for the one they will use after the infant seat because something to the effect of they are only approved safe for 3 years, so you are better off just buying when the time comes.

Re: BTDT Moms - Car Seat Question
It depends. When DD (7) was an infant, I used the infant carrier. I took it out until it was just easier to take her out. Then like you said, I just left it in the car. She was able to fit in it until 12 months which is when I moved her to a forward facing seat. Not sure if it was a convertible one?? Now they are recommending kids stay rear facing until 2. In that case, only a few infant carriers can be used that long otherwise, you need a convertible.
I probably just made it sound more confusing!

BTDT Moms - Car Seat Question
At most I think the infant seat would last a year no matter what the weight says but even leaving the seat in the car and taking lo out I still can't see using that long. They get to big for it and the convertible is roomier. We got to 6 months then. I had to change her. Trying to squeeze her in the infant seat was hard on both of us. She was miserable in the car but the convertible made it a little better. I would get both. Not necessary but for your shower but you probably will still want it in 6 months time. I think taking a newborn in and out of a convertible seat is to hard.

Re: BTDT Moms - Car Seat Question
IMO you will definitely need both. My DS was in the infant seat until he was about 10 months or so.

The expiration for carseats is generally 5 years. My DD seats are expiring in 2014, we got them in 2008 but the manufactured date was in 2007.

Re: BTDT Moms - Car Seat Question
We had both and I loved our infant carseat. So convenient especially when paired with the snap and go. I kept my DS in the infant seat until 11 months. By then I only took it out of the car if he had fallen asleep.
We registered for both, but only the infant seat was purchased. If you know what you want I'd go ahead and register for both. It can't hurt!

BTDT Moms - Car Seat Question
Started off with infant (more convenient then taking baby in and out of stationary convertible seat) When that got too heavy (apprx 8-11 mnths) moved them into a convertible seat then to booster when child reaches appropriate weight/height.

BTDT Moms - Car Seat Question
We used the infant seat for over a year (Snugride 30) and DD is in the 90th percentile, so not a small child. It is just personal preference. It worked for us since she fell asleep in the car a LOT and the transfer was seamless.
I'd put a convertible seat on your registry. Someone might buy it! Or you can always return for store credit and buy an updated model later!

Re: BTDT Moms - Car Seat Question
Definitely register for both. Convertible car seats are so expensive!!!!! We used our infant seat till 7 months old. DS didn't hit the height or weight limit but it was just too hard to carry it up the stairs. DS was much more comfortable in the convertible but the infant is so much easier with newborns.

Re: BTDT Moms - Car Seat Question
We only registered for the infant seat and bought the convertible seat at 6 or 7 months old because there are expiration dates on the seats. So if you have a convertible seat with a later date on it, the longer you'll get to use it for.

The weight and height limits on the infant seats are generally exceed around a year. My car seat went to 30 lbs or 30 inches, and DD had reached 30 inches before she turned 1. So it is not just a matter of leaving it in the car - she had outgrown it.
The infant seat is pretty necessary in the beginning so you can leave DC sleeping in the car seat. Even if they are not sleeping, grabbing the car seat and snapping it into a base is a lot easier than taking them out and putting them in the stroller seat. You can also throw the car seat in the cart when you go out shopping (not the front of the cart though - that is not safe!).
I also suggest waiting until you need the convertible car seat to buy it, not only because they expire, but because there will likely be a new model by the time you need it, and I would want the newest model and the longest time to expiration so you can use for DC2.

BTDT Moms - Car Seat Question
Don't register for the convertible car seat! You won't use it for a while, they have expiration dates, and possibility of it being recalled prior to first use. My DD stayed in it until she was 1 yrs old.
Get the infant car seat/register for it.
