Re: Those of you that waterproofed your basements..

Ours is semi-waterproofed.

DH did all the work himself, on both interior and exterior walls.

We haven't had any water issues yet, but I'm super paranoid after Sandy. I know the people closer to the water (i.e. South Amityville near me) were pretty hard hit still this past weekend.

We still want to put in a drainage system. (Con: It will only work if we have power).

I think I know what you are talking about with the "pool liner" system.

I have heard mixed reviews about it actually working, especially if we get another Sandy-type storm.

This is my choice, however, I don't want to put $$$ into finishing the basement in case another Sandy hits.

Doesn't seem worthwhile to me. That $$$ could be better used for the rest of our home.

We use the basement right now as DS play room and for storage washer/dryer/boiler.

ETA: If selling your home is in the future, and it has been hit by Sandy, I think doing whatever you can to make the basement waterproofed would be good for selling (despite what it looks like).
I'm still trying to wrap my head around WHO is going to want to buy in Sandy-hit areas, but that's another thread!

Dh ony sprayed this white stuff on all the exterior walls. Im pretty sure its suppose to preven water from seeping through. Weve never had a water issue down there before or after. Our basement is completely finished now

We did it, our basement is 1/2 finished. They did it from the outside, basically dug around the foundation, installed a window well and then sprayed a blue gel into the trench that hardens. It has a warranty (I can't remember how long) but it's been 3 years and we went from leaks every time it rains to dry. We used Habor Basement Waterproofing in East Meadow (they were AWESOME, clean, professional and no nonsense)

Thanks for your responses.

Morningcuppacoffee-Believe it or not, I think sales are going to slowly and eventually pick up. There are people looking to take advantage of great deals. Two flooded homes just were sold by me, granted they sold probably 60k less than if they were intact but it is promising.

I keep saying that whomever buys these homes is either getting the biggest bargain or regret of their lives. Only G-d knows the answer to that. If people were so certain of natural disasters, why would people be still buying homes in San Francisco?

I hope so.

Given the fact that homes still flooded by me this past weekend, I'd take my chances with an earthquake. Seems less likely, although they say NY is due for the big one to hit. Chat Icon

What does something like that cost? I imagine it's pretty costly.
