A little worried - enlarged kidneys
I had my anatomy scan the other day. Everything looked great- said baby is measuring perfect for where I should be and heart, brain, appendeges all seem to be good. But they told me baby's kidneys were retaining fluid and appears a bit enlarged. The doctor said could correct itself but we will want to monitor it. So tomorrow I go for a 2nd level sono and a high risk consult. Anyone else ever see the baby's kidneys enlarged and what was the result? The doctor told me not to lose sleep over it, but....I'm still a little worried. Thanks.

Yes, this happened with my DS. His kidneys were enlarged, retaining fluid. It took a few months, but it cleared up towards the end of my pregnancy and he is totally fine! Hope everything is OK with your baby too.

Re: A little worried - enlarged kidneys
This happened with my DS as well. We found out at my 20w sono and it appeared to get worse as my pregnancy went on. They did weekly NST towards the end and he was always fine. They did a sono on him as soon as he was born and his kidneys were perfect. As long as your fluid levels are good, there's no need to worry!

Re: A little worried - enlarged kidneys
Yes, this happened with my son. Apparently it is more common with boys. One kidney had a lot of fluid so they watched it throughout my pregnancy. They said that most times once the baby is born and urinate, the fluid will drain. About 1-2 months after he was born, we went for a kidney sonogram to see if the fluid was still there. It actually is still there but it's not being caused by a blockage (we tested for that) and since he isn't experiencing any side effects from it, besides just monitoring, we aren't doing a thing about it and he's totally fine. Doc said the fluid can stay. He has not experienced any negative side effect from it and it's not an issue! He's almost 2 now.

Re: A little worried - enlarged kidneys
Thank you all!! We just had our ultrasound and consult. Kidneys are still a little enlarged but the doctor said based upon all the other tests and the fact that everything else is normal, he was not really concerned about it but that my regular doctor should monitor it with ultrasounds. So, that made me feel better.
And Pricilla10, the doctor said even if it was still enlarged when he the baby is born, it could just be the normal for the baby, just not average. It's great that there are all these tests to make sure babies are fine, but sometimes, it just maked you crazy for no real reason.
Thanks again!

It is common with boys. Not sure if you know the sex but a friend had to find out because the dr said common in boys and not to worry. Dr said he would be more concerned if it was a girl. Not sure the reasoning behind it all. Their DS is fine but sees a urologist just to keep an eye on things for a bit.

Re: A little worried - enlarged kidneys
Both of my twins had this. One of them has been fine, but the other, at 3 years old, needed surgery on his kidney for a UPJ obstruction. I would just have the baby checked about 6 months after birth. Its just an ultrasound. Good luck! My osn is fine now, no lasting issues
