Websites to research school districts
What are some reliable sites to research schools?
We want to start house hunting and all we have is word of mouth and people's perceptions - some of which are quite dated, and who knows if they are accurate!

www.greatschools.org
www.schooldigger.com
These sites are great because they combine factual information/stats and anecdotal evidence (parent reviews, etc.).
I always tell my clients to also check out the official school district websites for the actual districts you are considering. It can help you get a "feel" for the district (just by looking at photos, news articles) and also provide info on what is offered (full-day kindergarten, after/before care, extracurriculars, etc.).

Re: Websites to research school districts
I use both of these and even mlsli.com under school information...
On the newsday site I see how the schools did on the major test 4th and 8th grade English and math and then the regents for those subjects too in HS as well as science and social studies
Great schools.org - give a ranking...and have a lot of info on there including reviews from parents and students
Ad mlsli.com has class size, student to teacher ratio and ethnicity, free lunch, etc...among other stuff..

Those sites tell you nothing about special ed, and since you never know if your child will, need services, you should talk to people in the areas you are researching. Many districts are great and score well for typical students, and really lack for special needs.

I agree. I think overall, it is very important to talk to people who LIVE in the district.
Mine (as well as the next district over) gets a bad rep because of the diversity, however, DS has needed services from CPSE and I've been pleasantly surprised.
A lot of people were also very happy with the high school----they said actually the biggest issue is rif raf from OUTSIDE of the district who try to come in and start trouble.
I also recently joined a mom's group on FB for my area and there seem to be a ton of people who live in my area who fit anything but the "stereotypes" outsiders have of us.
