What's a decent airfare from NYC to Chicago?
Summer flight, includes a weekend...I have no idea what it generally goes for. LaGuardia or JFK, Midway or O'Hare.
And also, why does it seem like there are very few direct flights (aside from Spirit, which I won't consider)...is it too early (late July?) or are nonstops not so common on this route?

I just started looking into this the other day. I believe JetBlue flies direct and thought I saw it for $99 each way. Only checked it out quickly...

Not sure about prices, but did you check Southwest - I've flown them non-stop to Chicago

i just booked direct flights with AA, but i also saw that Delta had direct flights.
if you are buying with enough advance notice, you can get a deal for under $250. i booked with not much notice, and it was over $400....

My brother's GF lives in Chicago and they take turns flying every month. I know he has spent as little as 150. I would say the average is 250 if booked at least a few weeks ahead of time.
Delta is usually the cheapest.

I fly for business all the time and we usually pay between 200-250. And that is usually with little notice.

Definitely watch Southwest for their deals. In Jan, I paid for my mom to come to Chi from NY during one of their sales for $110 RT.
Most of the time for work, I'll pay anywhere from $175 - 300, varies with how far in advance and whether there's a sale.
ETA: For Southwest, you'll want to fly from LGA to Midway. Islip used to have good fares to/from Chicago, but for the last 2 years it's usually been cheaper to go to LGA.
