Ladies 35 and Over

Did you have an Amnio or CVS just because of your age?

TIA

At the follow up to my NT scan the Amnio and CVS were presented to me as options, but we opted out. I'm going in to see the genetic counselor on Thursday for the results from my 16 wk scan, which my OB has already told me showed 2 soft markers, so I'm wondering just how serious this is and if the Amnio/CVS will be recommended at this point. For me, unless there is serious medical concern I will not have them done.

Nope. All the standard tests (NT scan, Level II, etc) came back awesome so I saw no need for further testing. I declined all genetic counseling, amnios, CVS, etc.

I am 37, will be 38 within weeks of our DS being born this month.

I did. I had an amnio. I was 38 when I had DS. While I think I probably would have done it no matter what age was def a HUGE factor. I did not 2nd guess my decision one bit.

Re: Ladies 35 and Over

Im 38, pregnant with #2. I had my 1st DC @ 35 years. I'm only havinng the NT scan, AFP bloodwork and Anatomy scan. If there are any problems with any of those, I would have the MaterniT21 test and would consider something more invasive. Risks of an amnio are 1:200 to 1:400 of MC. Unless there was an indication of a serious problem, I wouldnt want to take a chance.

This. I got pregnant (3rd) a week after I turned 40. My downs ratio is 1:1500 (same as a 20 yr old) the risk of a miscarriage from an amnio are higher. There were no red flags or concerns from my Dr's to consider these other tests...BUT with that said if you would have more peace of mind and feel better about it then get them done. Its a personal choice. Good Luck. Congratulations too Chat Icon Chat Icon

I was under 35 with my first 2, but I was 39 when I got PG with #3. I had no intention of doing any sort of testing *just* because of my age. I said only if something warranted it.

In the end, my NT scan came back with an enlarged nuchal thickness, so I did end up having the CVS. I would have done the CVS no matter what age, given the severity of the thickness that was measured. Everything turned out fine.

Ok....my OB suggested due to my age I may want to consider genetic counseling. I have a NT scheduled for the 21st but I may just do the NT, AFP and my level 2. If the first 2 show any abnormalities then I may consider other testing.

My last sono showed a cyst on the baby's brain. It's considered a soft marker. I was familiar with it from previous posters on this board and I also did a lot of research. It's actually fairly common and I'm praying that it's just a pocket of fluid that was captured as the baby's brain is developing.

That being said, I haven't done CVS or amnio. My anatomy scan is 3/16 and I'm hoping the cyst will be gone. If not, I will discuss further testing with my dr, including Materniti21 and amnio. Lots of hoping and praying until then that baby is healthy!

I was 36 during my pregnancy (gave birth on my 37th birthday) and opted for the MaterniT21 blood test over an amnio or CVS.

Re: Ladies 35 and Over

I was 36 when I had my first. I had told my doctor I was so nervous about doing an amnio but he said to wait until after the NT scan and then we could think about whether it was worth it or not. My test came back great so he said unless I really felt a need, he didn't believe it was necessary.

This time I will be 40 when baby is born. 1st doctor I saw (practice with about 5 doctors) we talked about it and he kept talking about how I am considered advanced maternal age, blah, blah...but then after I was kind of worried, he mentioned the Matrtniti21 and how it is very definitive and not invasive so, really, if I did that, I could probably not worry about an amnio or CVS. Not sure why he didn't lead with that. Chat Icon

We still had the NT with great results and the Materniti21 came back with no issues, so no further tests.

Re: Ladies 35 and Over

They just did a scan and drew blood that tested the Dna for any genetic disorders. ( I forgot the name of the test..sorry) but they came back normal and so we are not going to do the amino. Good Luck with everything!

Crashing - I was 35 when I got pregnant and delivered DS at 36 1/2. I didn't have any of those tests since everything looked good on the ultrascreen and the Dr didn't feel it was necessary.

I did have to sign a waiver though stating I opted not to have them done.

I'm 36... I had the NT scan and bloodwork last week as well as the Maternit21 bloodtest. My doctor said its 99% accurate and carries no risk since its just a bloodtest!

Re: Ladies 35 and Over

I did the materniT21 bc it is non-invasive. I think there are a few things it does not test for that CVS does but I think age really only effects Down's so that is the primary concern (if it is a concern for you). Same as others, the risks of CVS and amnio were scarier to me so I loved that the 21 was only a blood test. Oh and I am 40 with #2. My first pregnancy I did NT scan and low risks for everything so did not do anything else.

Re: Ladies 35 and Over

I'm 36 and had the NT screening and Materniti21 test the same week. My OB recommended it and I saw no reason not to get it (if anything, I found out gender really early which i wanted). No amnio or CVS were discussed prior and all our test results came back great so it was just left like that. OB told me that although the NT and Materniti21 both look at DS, trisomy 18, etc, the reason she also does the NT and related blood is bc it provides info about placenta and risk for pre-eclampsia (otherwise she would not have done the NT and quad screen).
