Backsplash tile- is 6x6 too big?
hi everyone
its time for us to decide on a backsplash
our floor tiles in the kitchen are 18x18. the tiles that are on our floor also come in 6x6 and 3x6...
i was hoping they'd come in a 4x4, because i thought thats a standard size for a backsplash tile, but they dont
is 6x6 too big? i cut paper and scotch taped it along some 4x4 tiles that i do have, but i was just wondering what everyone else has/does
i kinda think its ok to go with a 'bigger' 6x6 because our floor tiles are so huge but was hoping to get some opinions from the LI
-Any other opinions?

Re: tiles on backsplash- quick question-
I have 2 by 2. When I originally bought 6 x 6 tiles, my contractor told me that they were too big and would look funny. what about 2 x 4 subways?

I've seen them use large tiles on some HGTV shows and they looked great. Definitely a more contemporary look. You can try the 3x6 subway tiles. I think it depends upon the size of your kitchen and how much backsplash you have, as well as the style of your home and kitchen. The tile store should let you borrow a few tiles so you can lean them against the wall on the counter and see what you think. Or if you have photoshop you can see how it would look that way.

I really think it depends on the look you're going for. I think if you want a more traditional look, the 6x6 would work...it would be similar to the traditional 4x4 look. If you want the more popular look that people are doing right now, I'd go with the 3x6 and do it in the subway style.
I think both will look fine, just depends on your taste. Maybe you could do the 6x6 and turn them on their corner to put them in a "diamond" shape rather than a "square" shape, which may look more like a bathroom.

Re: Backsplash tile- is 6x6 too big?
I bought 6x6 and my contractor said, "why so big ?"
Then I was all freaked out. But it looked nice. He turned them diagonal, I liked that they were bigger. I thought it broke it up a little.
Sorry, I dont have a picture of it.

Backsplash tile- is 6x6 too big?
One could say everything is personal preference as to what look you like.
I don't like 6x6 for a backsplash, I think they are too big. Howver, some people do them, its not super super weird. if you said 12x12 then yes, that is really "different"
Have you googled 6x6 tile backsplash and clicked on images? some that come up are not 6x6 but plenty are. if you stack them, keep in mind that it will only be 3 tall.
we debated a lot on ourbacksplash and picked 2x4 mixed glass and travertine.
also keep in mind, you don't need to use the same tile as the floor. you just have to coordinate with it. and more importantly, you need to coordinate with the counter, that is the closest thing to the backsplash.
