St Lucia?
Dh and I are headed to st Lucia next week. Has anyone been there who had to make the 90 mon drive from the airport to the resort areas? Can you tell me about it? I've been reading it really scary. Also our resort does not offer any arranged rides. Are taxis readily available at the airport. We would rent a car but I read driving there is not advised for drivers who arent use to mountain driving. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: St Lucia?
Honestly the ride was not bad at all compared to what I had read prior to our trip. Just be warned- along the way your driver may try to stop off at certain points where locals are waiting to try to sell you fruit, bread, or let you pet their snake, etc. You have to make it known that you're not interested in stopping. HTH! Have a wonderful time!

Re: St Lucia?
The ride is long, most of the resorts are at the other end of the island so you're basically driving across the whole island once you depart the airport. Its not a bad ride, some resorts are on hilly mountains and the roads are VERY narrow so just make sure youre on an empty stomach.
When I was there for our HM, we stayed at La Toc and I was so tired from the flight, I fell asleep for most of the ride. If your mini-van doesnt have A/C, then the trip feels much longer...

Re: St Lucia?
Where is your resort located?
WHEN people went will impact their experience. Hurrican Tomas hit the island pretty badly in 2010. When we went in 2011 the roads were still pretty bad, lots of areas still washed out. It was much better in 2012. I don't know about cabs from first hand experience, I have always stayed at Sandals resorts with a private van. The roads ARE very windy and I think the disorientation is exacerbated by the fact that you'e driving on the "wrong" side of the road. By the time we're going back to the airport it's a much more pleasant ride since I'm used to it. I actually have fallen asleep on the ride, so I don't think it's that bad

Re: St Lucia?
Oh and I would 100% NOT rent a car. it's the wrong side of the road, it's all mountainous driving, the hills are incredible so you have to drive automatic, and the traffic patterns are nearly undiscernable. I have seen tourists in runoff ditches. Don't do it

St Lucia?
Worst.experience.ever.
The ride was AWFUL!! ANother van that went to our resort and left a few minutes before ours at the airport got into an accident. One woman came back to the hotel with crutches. They are the WORST drivers.
I told our butler there was no way i'm taking those vans back to the airport so he arranged a private car take us. Better but still awful.
I didn't want to go on any excursions b/c we'd have to drive there. I did go on one and it was so bad. I was very close to getting sick in the car. We didn't go to any other resorts because of this.
One main reason I won't go back to St. Lucia...
ETA: I stayed at a Sandals resort.
