BTDT Moms: Newborn vs. 0-3 months
I'm just wondering about buying things in newborn sizes versus size 0-3 months. I'm also wondering about diapers in newborn size versus size 1. Are the newborn sizes likely to be useful only for a very short time? I'm finding it very hard to shop in advance for baby since there is no way to know how big she'll be!

It really depends on the baby. Both of my boys are on the shorter side. DS1 was 8 lbs 1 oz and DS2 was 7 lbs 11 oz at birth. Both were in newborn clothes for at least 5 weeks and newborn diapers for about a month.

It also depends on their shape though I think b/c my DS was 8lbs 4 oz and 20.5 inches, but he was only in NB diapers and clothes for about 2 weeks. He's always been very chunky in the belly and thighs so he started leaking out of the NB diapers early.
My advice would be to have a couple of NB outfits. You can always buy more if you need it.
I would get one small pack of NB diapers and go from there.

ITA with this, and my DD was born roughly the same size.

DD was 6 lb 8 oz and 20 inches at birth and she lost some weight when we got home. The new born diapers are perfect for her. As far as clothes, even some of her newborn clothes are really big on her.

Depends on the baby's size. My lo was born at 8lb 5oz. Most newborn stuff lasted a week so it wasn't worth it for us...we needed 3 months
She also couldn't fit into newborn diapers

Re: BTDT Moms: Newborn vs. 0-3 months
As others said, totally depends on the baby. DD was 7.6 lb at birth and wore newborn diapers for about a month. While she still fit into them after that time, they couldn't contain her blowouts!
As for clothes, she wore newborn size through around 6 weeks. She's now 10.1lb and can still wear newborn onesies, but is too tall for sleep and plays.

Re: BTDT Moms: Newborn vs. 0-3 months
I'd have a few newborn sizes. DD was 8lbs and we went straight to 0-3 months and size 1 diapers. I found the diapers were large enough not to rub the cord and she quickly grew into and out of the 0-3 month clothes.

I wouldn't go crazy with NB stuff. DS was 8lbs at birth and wore NB clothes for 3 weeks. The 0-3 may be a little big but at least the baby can wear them longer. He lasted in newborn diapers a little longer- maybe 5 weeks? Size 1 has lasted him about 2 months so far.

My DS came home at 6 lbs. I only had 2 newborn outfits. The 0-3 were big but fine. Diapers - they had ones in the hospital and I had some newborn at home. But I could have used the ones. Again big but workable.

Re: BTDT Moms: Newborn vs. 0-3 months
Depends on the baby. My girls came home at 5-1 and 5-7 and were in nb until about 2 mo. The length started getting too short. I remember my brother coming home in a 0-3 outfit that was huge on him. (7lb-12oz) My mom never thought to get nb since my sister and I were huge and went right into 0-3. Id say with an average full term baby you will only use nb til about 9 lb tops which might only be a few weeks if baby is 7 or more at birth. If anything 0-3 might just be a bit big for awhile. Maybe get a nb coming home outfit. My girls really needed premie for a few weeks and nb was huge on them but I didnt want to waste them for just a few weeks.
They were both in nb diapers for awhile too because they had skinny legs and the size 1 wouldnt close around thier legs. Although the hospital used size 1.

Re: BTDT Moms: Newborn vs. 0-3 months
I'd buy at least 1 package of newborn diapers and 1 package of size 1. Then get more of whatever you need once your LO is born. I'd buy a package of newborn onesies and/or undershits as well as 0-3 months. You can always leave them unopened and exchange after the baby is born.
I was told over and over again that my DS was going to be a big baby and not to bother with newborn diapers. Well, he was not a big baby and is now almost 4 weeks old and still in newborn diapers! I use size 1 overnight to prevent leaks. He's also still in newborn size clothing, though I don't have much of it, so I usually just put him in 0-3 month clothing and it's a little big on him.

Re: BTDT Moms: Newborn vs. 0-3 months
Both my kids were born just under 8 lbs and fit in newborn sizes for only a few weeks. maybe 2-3 weeks. So, I wouldn't buy anything in newborn size that you want them to wear much after a month. I would go with 0-3.
As for diapers, DS was heavier than DD, but he wore newborn diapers home. DD was lighter but only fit in size 1 diapers because of her chunka thighs. I wouldn't buy many nb diapers, I would wait till baby is born to see what you need in bulk.
