I think we are leaning towards tiling the shower area, and then only tiling up to a chair rail height (is that 4' or so?) on the sink and toilet walls, then painting to the ceiling. I think this is a more modern look, but my parents think it will look cheap.

What is the norm these days?

We re-did our master bath with tile all the way up on all of the walls - with a very modern lstyle of tile. We are planning on doing our second upstairs bathroom the way you described doing yours - tile all the way up in the shower/tub and then half way up on the on the walls and painting the rest. I think you can create any kind of look either way, just depending on the materials that you use.

So right outside the shower is just paint? Do you have shower doors or a curtain?

I'm a little worried that that area would get too wet since we are going to have a curtain, not doors.

Bathroom Tile

We tiled our whole bathroom. I was iffy about it at first, DH was all about it, now I am so happy we did it, I love the way it looks. We put a glass tile border a little more than halfway up the wall, around the whole bathroom as well.

Re: Bathroom Tile

I'm not sure what the norm is but we have tile all the way up only in the shower and then the walls are wainscotting half way up and wall paper top half (mind you I hate the bathroom but not for those reasons) but in any event we have a shower door and no water issues. I don't think it would look cheap at all, if done right!

Aggg I wish I could post pics from my phone but if you want, send me a fm with your email address. Our bathroom has tile halfway up the wall and I love it. Actually two baths have them halfway up. The bathroom with the tub, Aka the kids bathroom, has tiles all the way up

I can send you pics of all three
Unless someone can walk me through posting pics from my phone!

We have tile halfway up, except for in the shower where it goes all the way up.

I like it that way. I never thought of tiling all the way up. It's warmer feeling, maybe? And you can play with color and change it up whenever you feel like it.

Re: Bathroom Tile

I love tile halfway up and I re-did my master this way last year. I love the way the paint looks as I went with a dark color I love! I plan on doing the same when I re-do my main bath.
