Does anyone make their own baby food?

Im toying around with the idea of making my own... am I crazy? Is it doable?

The girls are 5 mos and started on cereal with bananas and/or applesauce... Once I move on to other things, Id like to consider making it myself.

Its definitely not as scary as it sounds. I did a combination of store bought and home made foods for them.

For the home made baby food, I steamed frozen veggies (sometimes fresh) in the microwave then used the magic bullet to puree. I didn't freeze anything because I found it easy to make a few servings and keep it in the fridge a day or two. I made peas, carrots, green beans, corn, and mixed veggies mostly. I bought the "difficult" to prepare veggies that don't come frozen- like sweet potatoes, squash, etc.

that sounds a whooooolllleee lot easier than what I envisioned. I pictured buying veggies fresh, washing,cuting, cooking and pureeing.

DD is 14 months now and so I have been trying to just cook healthier for DH and I so that we could all eat the same foods and not cook separatly for her. But I did make her home made baby food --- it does take a bit of a time committment but is not hard (and I am not one to cook!) .. I would buy fresh veggies and fruit and steam the veggies mostly... I would bake sweet potatoes, Butternut squash and spagghetti squash and all the fruits. I would make my own combinations once she was ready for them and blend them in a blender and would freeze in portions (I started off not freezing but it started to make sense to freeze them once she started eating many different types of veggies and fruit so that she wouldnt keep eating the same things every day.. or sometimes just so that I would have one week on and one week off of cooking ... or if I had a big veggie like butternut squash which i couldnt consume in a couple of days. I basically found my own groove of what worked. Its totally doable and its really for a pretty shore while. I followed this website as a guide for whento introduce what (in conjunction with my ped, and also to get ideas for preparing the food). http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/ I made my own meat too.. chicken stews etc... once she could eat meat also. I did not however make my own grains. That is where I drew the line. For what its worth some veggies, like peas and green beans I found easier to buy frozen and still do... same with applesauce.


ETA: I used a pot that had a steamer lid so i would steam veggies while I had stuff boiling (i.e. chicken stew, lentil soup, chicken soup etc) ..saved lots of time. Steaming is super fast.

Just started with dd. made pears and going on to prunes next. So far it's def doable!

Ive been doing it for 3 months and its def doable. It can be time consuming but i find if i make enough to freeze you can def do it. I prob cook once a week for baby. Im trying new things with her and just try to do a few things at once and freeze. Then i take out what i need. I also use that wholesomefood website mentioned above. Its fantastic. I follow my peds recs of course but use the site for recipes.
And note to add im not a 'love to cook' kinda girl lol but enjoy doing this for my baby girl

Oo and i found the baby bullet to br a waste of money! I use my regular hand blender to puree. I do like the baby bullet storage though i would buy that.
I bake veggies or steam based in recipe and then puree and put in small containers with the amount that i feed her.

Made all his baby food! Now he just eats what we eat so we eat healthier...but making baby food was way less intimidating than it seemed! Got the baby bullet which I loved but now realize all we needed was a blender! Steamed, blended, stored...easy! Ill do it again!!

It's not difficult at all! Yes it does take time though but you can make a lot in a few hours. You do not need a kit, just a regular food processor. I use ice cube trays to portion the purees and put them in ziploc bags and freeze them. I've made avocado, carrots, bananas, apples, squash, sweet potatoes, and pears.

I've been doing it and find it to be super easy.

I think I might give the food processor a go. The magic bullet seems to be a pita.

Making baby food is seriously easy. And this comes from a FTWM who gets overwhelmed very easily. Give it a try and see if it works for you. I would just thrown the veggies in the pot to steam, throw them int he magic bullet, and then put it in ice cube trays to freeze. Once frozen I'd pop them into Ziplocs and then just deforst what I needed each night for the next day.

It's definitely doable. I used my Braun handheld blender to purée the food.

I started making my own and it's super easy. We use organic veggies a steamer and food processor. It takes maybe about 30 mins to make everything. I make a couple of batches ahead if time. I purée everything then put them in silicone ice cube trays ( super easy to take out of the trays). Plastic wrap them then when they're frozen I put them into ziplock bags and label. Each cube is a perfect size and defrost easily

I made all of her "stage 1" foods myself. It was super easy and I did freeze food. And I did enjoy it. i felt that it gave her a good foundation of fresh, healthy food to start.

When she started eating stage 2 foods with different combinations I started buying organic pre-made stuff because I work full time and I couldn't keep up with the wider variety I was trying to give her.
