Umbilical Hernia

DD is 15 months and has "fingertip" size umbilical hernia that she has had for about 10 months. The ped said it should heal itself by 1 yr+ but it hasn't so now she has said we could consult with a ped surgeon to see if they would fix it if we wanted to. Has anyone been through this? did you fix it?

Not sure what we should do...

DH has one. Never gave him a problem. When he loses weight, it can't be seen at all.

I think DS has one too. He did when we was a baby. He's 2.5 and when he hasn't pooped, you can see it.

IMO, I'd rather stay away from doing not totally necessary surgery when a kid is under 3.

Umbilical Hernia

My son is 19 month old and has an umbilical hernia. He sees a urology surgeon and general surgeon for other issues, but both have said they won't correct the umbilical hernia until around age 4. There is a possibility of it self closing up to age 3-4. So if my son still has it at 4, they will correct it then. Inguinal hernias in the groin area usually close by age 1, so maybe that's what your Ped was thinking of.

Thank you so much for your response and the information. I think we will hold off on a surgeon consult.

DD was born with one. At 6 its still slightly there. Every time I brought it up to the doc, when she was a baby he said "oh it will be gone by age 1" then age 1 he said age 2, so on and so forth. Now he says if its not causing her any pain, leave it alone.
