Passport (new to me) regulation - FYI
just wanted to share:
I just learned that a passport has to be valid until at LEAST 6 months AFTER your date of travel too..so if you are flying in the spring and your passport expires in the summer you have to renew it in order to travel now!!! CRAZY!!! I bet a lot of people who are traveling do not know that....
Figured I would share for anyone traveling out of the country this spring break!

Passport new regulation (i think) FYI
That's actually been a regulation for quite some time but perhaps it hadn't been enforced as much until now.

Re: Passport (new to me) regulation - FYI
It's not a regulation and it varies by country.
Some countires require 3 months, some require 6 months, some don't care as long as it's valid on the date of travel.
The best thing to do is check with whatever country your visiting and your airline.
From the US State Department website:
Q:How long is a passport valid and when should I renew my passport?a:If you were over age 16 when your passport was issued, your passport is valid for 10 years. If you were age 15 or younger when your passport was issued, your passport is valid for 5 years.
The Issue Date of your passport can be found on the data page of your Passport Book or on the front of your Passport Card.
If possible, you should renew your passport approximately nine (9) months before it expires. Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six (6) months beyond the dates of your trip. Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met.
If your passport has already expired, you may still be able to renew your passport by mail. See How to Renew Your U.S. Passport.

Re: Passport (new to me) regulation - FYI
The UK, most of the EU countries and almost all of the Caribbean islands do not have this requirement.
The countries that do have it are some Asian countries, some Middle Eastern countries, etc.

Re: Passport (new to me) regulation - FYI
My FIL had to renew for this reason when we went on a cruise in 2011. I am not sure who required it though--if it was the cruise ship, or one of the countries we visited. It may have been Greece or Turkey, but they both said 3 months. Maybe Pricncess added on 3 months or goodmeasure?

Hmm that is not new. I know for cruises back in 2004 that was the rule if not earlier.

If you are sailing in and out of a US port, I believe as long as the passport is not expired you are ok.

Re: Passport (new to me) regulation - FYI
Not true, I travelled this week with a passport that expires in June, that's only 4 months and it was fine. My sons US passport also expires in June and the IO only said to me did you know it expires? And I told him I was going to the US Embassy to have it renewed in April. He said, that was fine. There may be some exceptions but you can travel with less than six months.

Depends on where... If you are going to one of the countries that require the 6 mo the airline won't even let you board the plane...so I've been told...I guess it depends on how strict the agent and the country is

Re: Passport (new to me) regulation - FYI
For all the cruises I have taken this has been the requirement to sail. Not sure if it is the islands, or the cruiseline that requires this but when we have sailed since 2004 (maybe even earlier but this is when I remember seeing it bcI had to get mine changed when I was married bc it was expiring in 3 months) they have said it. I know when I traveled with my schools and studied we were told the same. I always just assumed it was the rule. I wonder if they say that bc unless you rush it a passport takes a while to get and if something happens you could be stuck on vacations. The rule probably keeps people from getting on their trip and having it expire. While most of us on here are good about that not happening I bet there are a lot of clueless people who have had that happen.
