Baby naming
2 questions....
Any Jewish mommas doing a baby naming if its a girl? I do plan on having a bris for a boy but was on the fence about a baby naming. Dh and I are not at all religious -we had a Jewish wedding but that was it.
Second question... I have a baby naming to attend.... Just wondering how much of a gift to give.

Re: Baby naming
Yes, we will do one if the baby is a girl.
For pretty much all Jewish occasions I give a multiple of $18 or some such thing. Depending on your closeness with them this can be $118 or $180 or, if you aren't close, a smaller amount that is a multiple of 18.

Re: Baby naming
I feel quite guilty, but we're not having a bris if baby is a boy. After calling a million mohels, paying in the 1k range for something that would otherwise be paid by insurance is something we just can't do right now. We're waiting to close on our first house, need to buy a second car... so every cent counts. I'm hoping that a baby naming will be less costly so thaat we can at least do that.

Re: Baby naming
I'm supposed to be planning one right now, but have been a huge slacker about it. The trouble is, we want to do a typical Jewish brunch with bagels, lox, etc, but are having trouble finding a space in Manhattan that's not rediculously priced. So, we might just do a small thing in our apt with just our parents and siblings. DD was born 12/21/12 so we're aiming to do it in April.

Re: Baby naming
With DD1 we did the baby naming on her first birthday. With DD2 (born a little over a week ago) we are also going to do the baby naming on her first birthday. When DS was born, we did have a bris.

Baby naming
We did DD's baby naming when she was about 5 months old, on the birthday of the person she was named for. We will probably do one for this baby too, but not sure when.
Most people brought very small gifts, like a book or a toy - we did not get any money at all. MIL got DD a personalized name puzzle, and I thought that was a good gift for a naming.

It's a ceremony almost like a Christening in the Jewish religion. The baby naming part of it is when the baby is given his/her Jewish name.
We're not doing a baby naming since we decided to raise our children Catholic (I'm Jewish but DH is Catholic - my parents are the same way but I was raised Jewish) but with the gift I would do what Mer said. With a Jewish celebration of any sort I always give in the $18 family. With a family member or close friend for a baby naming I would probably give $118/$180 (depending on the celebration after the ceremony). For just a friend that I wasn't as close to it would be something like $54 ($18 x 3).

Baby naming
The gifts all depend on how religious people are. Religious Jews do not believe in baby showers or giving/buying anything for the baby before he/she is born. Therefore, at the bris/baby naming, they give gifts like you would normally see at a shower.
I think at any gift giving event, you will see the full range of gifts. Some people are just more generous than others. Give what you can/feel is right.
Also, $118 is not an amount that is usually given, as it is not a multiple of 18 (which is for chai = life). $108 is a multiple.
Also, if you have given this person gifts already (say a baby shower) then another gift is not really necessary, or just a small gift.
And yes, a Jewish baby is not named until the bris/baby naming ceremony. When my DS was born, we did not tell anyone his name (english or hebrew) until his bris.

We had a baby naming for DD1 when she was about 4 months old. We'll do the same for DD2 but are waiting until the summer this time. FWIW DH and I are Reform Jews and not very observant, but knew we'd have a bris or baby naming for any child we had.
Gifts depend on a few things: relationship with the couple, if you've already given a shower gift, etc. We usually give money in multiples of 18.
