question for home therapists
Is it rude to ask to have your shoes off in the house?
One evaluator looked annoyed but she did remove them. DS will be starting therapy this week and I wanted to ask for opinions. Ty

No,
As a therapist in homes, I am asked to remove shoes all the time - sometimes cultural, sometimes b/c the baby is crawling around. Not rude at all!

I don't mind taking off my shoes. I've have several homes that were no shoe households. In my own house we don't wear shoes. There was only one house that I worked in that I would NEVER remove my shoes because there was frequently dog urine on the floor.

When I was an OT I really hated when I was asked to do that, especially if I wasnt wearing socks. If its something you insist on, give them a heads up so they can bring slipper socks.

No, it's not rude . . . It's your house. I always wear socks and sneakers incase I do have to take my shoes off. As the other poster stated, I would only not take my shoes off if it was a sanitary issue.

I've learned during sessions to ALWAYS wear socks lol. I was asked once and was wearing flats. I couldn't focus on anything else the whole time. I wouldn't ask them to the first session but make them aware you will be asking them in the future. I don't think its rude at all if they are aware.

Our physical therapist keeps a pair of socks in her toy bag for just this reason.

You can tell the agency and they can tell the therapist before they come. As a therapist I would always ask especially in the winter months. So no I def do not think it is rude :)
