oil vs gas heat?
I am debating about swithcing from oil heat to gas heat. we already have hot water running in the house and gas stove. I am not sure why the previous owners didnt convert heat to gas.
i got one quote so far to convert and the cost was $4300. While high i know its not ridculously high compare to what others have to pay to do this.
So with that said would you convert why or why not?
Is there any negatives to have gas compare to oil.
Is it really cheaper to have gas than oil. I rented a 2 bedroom house that had gas before moving here and gas wasnt that expenisive but i know it was small. Our current house is 3 level 2 bedrooms and eventaully a bathroom downstaris has 2 bedrooms bathroom living room, dinning room kitchen, basement is not complete but planning on doing it eventually.

We are converting in the summer.
Yes gas is cheaper. Our bill will be roughly half. Oil prices are not going down anytime soo and we wil just continue to pay more. We started payign oil at 2.89 and 2 years later we are at 3.89 a gallon. I can only imagine what it will be in 5 years.

Re: oil vs gas heat?
If I were you, I would convert. I mean $4300 is really just the cost of getting a new gas heating system... you are lucky you have gas in the house and you don't need to pay to run the lines, which is where the true expense is.
I have gas heat, and while the bills can still be high in the winter, it's nowhere near as expensive as oil.
But other advantages are that it's cleaner (you don't get that oil smell, you don't have to worry about your oil tank leaking, etc.) AND it's lower maintenance in that you don't need to worry about running out, scheduling oil deliveries.
Also, if selling your home is ever a possibility, having gas heat is viewed as a valuable upgrade by buyers.

I don't have a direct price comparison but I would have to say gas it way cheaper. In my first house, a tiny cape about 1100 sqaure feet from October through April we were getting a delivery of oil that was around $350-$400 every 3-4 weeks. May-September maybe we had oil being delivered probably half that amount of time but the same amount. In our house now we have about 2k square feet and we pay $104/month on balanced billing for gas which includes our heat, stove and dryer.
Also I think it's great for the resale. When DH and I were househunting after I got rid of my first place he wouldn't even consider a place with oil.

ITA with this. When we were house hunting we were only looking for houses that had gas heat.

Same here. Oil is very expensive, it's a huge bill every year we do not have gas lines, or we would have converted

Re: oil vs gas heat?
I converted to gas in my house. Oil in my rental house now.
Oil is KILLING me!!
My gas bill was never more than $200 in my house. Oil bills are coming in at $400-600 a hit. I've had 2 deliveries already this month !!
Definitely convert to Gas.
I cant wait to go back to my house and not have to pay these oil deliveries anymore.
