BTDT of now older children- did they keep the same sleep tiime as when they were infants?
DS is 9mths and for as long as I can remember he is a night owl. Goes to bed around 12am, exhausting for me because I have to get up early the next day to go to work. So Im wondering, will he every go to sleep earlier as he gets older? Or should I expect this to be his sleep schedule? Ive tried getting him up early, around 9am (he usually wakes up around 11AM) but he still goes to sleep at midnight no matter what.

dd is now 2.5 almost 3. she has started to go to bed at 8 instead of 7 around 2 yrs.
I would not be happy with that schedule. He should be in bed earlier than midnight.
I would wake him at 7 am for a long time and get him used to it and tired by 8 or 9 the latest.

i would definitely try and change that schedule. But you just can't leap into a new one. You have to do it slowly. 15 minute incriments every couple of nights.
ds#2 is 12 months and goes to bed at 7pm at the latest. ds#1 will be 5 in june and he goes to bed at 8pm if he takes a nap, 7pm if he doesn't nap. It's been that schedule since he was 2.

DD is 5 and DS is 2.5. They go to bed 7-7:30 and both sleep 12-13 hours. This is been this bedtime for as long as I can remember.
ETA: I agree with the others, I would definitely work on that schedule a bit. I am in bed long before midnight, I can't imagine the kids being up that late!

My older DS bedtime has gotten later but its because he takes a decent nap still - we haven't found the happy medium.
It's great your DS is sleeping so long and there is no problem with a midnight bedtime if it works with your schedule which it doesn't.
I agree with Ali - try getting him down earlier in 15 minute increments. Changing the bedtime drastically or waking him up early isn't going to fix the issue.
Good luck!

I was wondering the same. This is how DD is, but the schedule works for us right now. I'm sure down the line it won't though...

That schedule sounds way off to me especially if you are getting up early in the morning and DH doesn't work nights or something that gives you a reason to keep him up that late.
Have you tried consistently waking him earlier? Even 9am is on the late side for most kids his age. He is sleeping a decent stretch at least, so that's a good thing.
It's harder to change things as he gets older.
You are the mom, you decide when bedtime is.
I would just change his schedule. He will adjust.
Wake him by 8am every day. No late afternoon naps - nothing after 4pm. Dinner around 6/6:30. Start a routine after dinner - bath, bottle, books, whatever you want but consistent every night. Bedtime should be by 8:30/9pm eventually.

Re: BTDT of now older children- did they keep the same sleep tiime as when they were infants?
Both my DS only stayed up late when they where under 4 months and not on a real schedule. After that they started going to sleep by 7-8pm when they turned 6 months. Older DS ( 3 almost 4 yrs old)still goes to bed by 8pm as does my 10 month old. They wake up around 730am. Your DS is going to bed way too late!! If he wakes up at 11pm what times does he nap during the day. Both my boys at that age would take two naps. One around 930-10am and the other around 1-2pm. You can usually put them down two to three hours after they wake up. So 730 wake up 930-10 nap. Try waking him up really early. And putting him down for naps earlier. Make sure last nap is no later then 2-3pm. Get a nice bedtime routine down and aim for 8pm bedtime.

Re: BTDT of now older children- did they keep the same sleep tiime as when they were infants?
Yea, maybe I should change his schedule slowly. He just put himself on this schedule..
Here is what a day looks like:
Wakes up- 10AM 1st nap- 12pm-2:30pm 2nd nap- 9pm STTN- 11:30pm
If he doesnt get in his 9pm nap he gets super cranky. I mean, his schedule works great for me during the weekend because he lets me sleep in until 10am but during the week it sux because I have to wake up early go to work. DH is the only one that wins because he is with him in the AM so he wakes up at 10am with him. ugh.

Re: BTDT of now older children- did they keep the same sleep tiime as when they were infants?
The first year my DD was in bed for the night around 7-730. (Started STTN at 8 wks) Around age one it became 8pm. She's 4 now and she is still in bed, and out cold within a minute, at 8pm and usually sleeps until at least 8am.
So with her, she's basically stuck to the same routine since almost birth but its what she's use to as well. We created her routine, she's just stuck with it.

Why the 9pm nap? If his afternoon nap has him up by 2:30 I would totally shift his bedtime and get him down for the night by 7-7:30. It might take a while for him to adjust but in the end, you will be happier and more rested. I personally think his bedtime is way late. I would start changing his routine and he will adjust. Good luck!!

At 9 months, DD was still taking 2 naps.
1st nap: 10am-12pm 2nd nap: 3pm-5pm
IMO, your DS should not be taking a nap at 9pm. If you wake him up by 7am or 8am, then put him down at 10 am for a nap and then another nap around 3pm. That way he will be ready for bed by 8-9pm.

Re: BTDT of now older children- did they keep the same sleep tiime as when they were infants?
There is hope my sons changed. He was a bit of a night owl went to bed around 10 and slept til about 9ish in the morning. It worked for us as we were both working and he didn't have to get up in morning we have a nanny. Gradually it started to get a little earlier after we dropped naps. He then was going to bed around 9 or 930 but he stoppe sleeping as late getting up at 730 or 8. So he was getting tired. Now he goes to bed between 8 and 9 since he has to be up for schoo.
If I were you try and move that 9pm nap - that would drive me crazy.

Re: BTDT of now older children- did they keep the same sleep tiime as when they were infants?
For us and our night owl.. I would let her 'nap' late around 8pm then keep her awake on purpose and then finally let her crash at 10pm.
She's 4 and yes there were and are times she'll go to sleep earlier but 9pm -10pm is pretty regular.
Trick was she's up early, naps on and off (at that age) but I had to NOT let her take an afternoon nap to keep her up for an evening nap then force her awake to stay up until 10pm so she'd finally sleep until at least 5am. It worked for us.
midnight is late, but I've been there. Just takes some juggle to work it out. Especially as he's sleeping so late, he obviously needs/wants that sleep. For AJ she'd be up so early after going to 'sleep' at 8pm that I moved her sleep later so we could all SLEEP!

Dont know, its what he does. I give him a bottle around 9pm and then he falls asleep on me. It doesnt last long, maybe 20mins top. I cant put him to bed earlier because hes not tired and (I am blame for this) but I put him to bed when he falls asleep on me. I dont let him CIO. So if I put him to bed at 7:30 ish he'll scream his head off forever. I think I just need to have DH wake him up earlier in the morning. Even though like I said, hes woken him up earlier before around 9am (1-2hrs before he normally wakes up) and he still goes to sleep late.

Gotcha. I would just slowly start adjusting him. Wake him in the morning a little earlier, trying shifting naps and feedings. I would just play around with his routine until you find a better schedule for you both.

Re: BTDT of now older children- did they keep the same sleep tiime as when they were infants?
He's not tired yet at 7:30 because he sleeps until 10/11am!
He seems to be on a roughly 12ish hour schedule split between day and night.
Have your DH wake him no later than 8am, and I can pretty much guarantee that he'll be ready for bed by 9pm.
His schedule should look something like this:
Wake at 8 Nap at 11 Nap at 3 Dinner at 6/6:30 Bed around 8/9pm

Sounds great to me! He's already a good sleeper - 11 hours straight at night. He just needs a little push to do it at more appropriate times.

Yes, exactly what I m getting at.
Also keep in mind that this may not happen on the first or second night. But if you are consistent with his new schedule he will get it, and everyone will be happier ... well, except maybe for your DH who does t get to sleep until 111am.

Yes you need to change his schedule!! and I agree completely with what everyone else has written. It may take a week or so and that week will be rough, but in the end he will have a schedule similar to the rest of us.
