I just stay on top of them - and if there's something in particualr that they become facinated with, I ask if I can move it out of reach

this

and I bring a few of their toys to distract them with kid friendly stuff

Depends. Scissors and knives type stuff I will move deeper onto a table, etc. Can't imagine people mind that and people without little kids just don't think of it. Decorative type stuff I just say don't touch. Not so easy with my 14 month old but we manage- I'll basically just keep redirecting.

The killer for me is staircases. Basically an entire visit is me or dh chasing my little one to make sure he doesn't fall down stairs- especially when older kids running up and down entice him. Kudos to anyone who managed to teach a young toddler to just not approach a staircase. We have gates all over.

Honestly? My little guy makes any visiting stressful- he also puts everything into his mouth, so even a house babyproofed for say a 3 year old, has a lot of potential danger. Now that my older one is approaching 3 I have no problems anymore with that type of stuff.

I can't sit down even for a minute at someone else's house. We have a two year old who thinks he can touch everything and learned to run way too quickly and a nine month old who just learned to crawl and stand on the same day. We stay home ALOT.

I am the person who never changed a single thing in her house because a baby came into the picture. Obviously we don't leave scissors around but I never moved things up high, we left our home fully decorated, the Xmas trees were always decorated and NOT gated and basically we taught our DD...........hands off. It's fine to look but you don't touch. We were on top of her all the time when she was younger and she got it, quickly. She has never touched things in our home that weren't hers and she NEVER touches other people things. She always asks first. She knows the rules.

Basically, I felt it was important that she learn from a very young age that just because something interests her its not for her to touch. I didn't want to rearrange my house and I didn't want to have to worry when we took her out and about. I would never expect anyone to chnge around their house because my child is coming nor would I move things around in someone else's home. Nothing drives me more insane than people coming over and rearranging my house so I wouldn't do it to someone else.

DH and I felt like it was our job to stay on top of her when we were out and to teach her how to respect our things as well as others. Going out has never been an issue because we set the foundation early with her.

That is great that you were able to teach a new walker or a crawler not to touch things she is interested in! Or not to be interested in what the other kids running down a staircase are doing. I do think it is natural to be curious though.

Again, not speaking of your own home, just when you go to your family's house..it was more of a "do you get to sit and relax" type question.

I was also told that my 16 month old was so into running up and down the stairs and being kinda crazy, because he was a boy. It was kind of a joke between the moms there, because the one little girl there just sat with her mom, while the boys were looking at the fire, grabbing for bottles..remotes, etc. Haha..not true for all, but in this case it was pretty funny!

The stairs are scary. My older DC just turned 3 as well, and just when you stop worrying about them on stairs, the little ones come toddling up behind them!

Also my 3 year old was in the ER with a terrible gash to his forehead as a result of a trip and fall..total freak accident. So, as much as you can teach your kids, they can still get hurt, and accidents happen. When we go someplace we only visit once a month or so, I tend to be on top a lot more than I am at home, where I know what is around. Especially my 16 month old.

My oldest was the same way. We taught her at home and she never had a problem at other people's homes. I never need to worry.

Relax? God no, not when she was little. Chat Icon

DH and I use to be jealous of our friends with kids who were a little older because they actually got to sit and NOT be on top of their kids constantly. We were always chasing after DD when she was small. But eventually, as she matured, we didn't need to worry and she would go off and play and we could relax a little more. It just takes time.

I agree, kids are curious........no doubt.......and DD was curious too about things, we just made it a point to be on top of her about "looking and not touching" and we were always redirecting her. She learned quick though and eventually we got to relax too! Chat Icon

Gotcha..I am speaking of very young toddlers...like 12-17 month olds who were at the party. My 3 year old was fine, it was the 16 month old that was looking to take a tumble down the stairs!

Honestly? I would probably leave early. This happened at my brothers apartment. His girlfriend has all sorts of breakables, antique glass, huge book shelves, completely unbaby-friendly. She seemed freaked out too that DS was going near her stuff, though I was on top of him. Needless to say, it was very uncomfortable and we only stayed about a half hour before it just got to be too much and we left.

I would watch her carefully, but I would totally move anything I thought was dangerous - put scissors away or move candles. If I didn't know the host well, I would ask where to put them.

I have no problem moving breakable/dangerous items at others house and I doubt that others mind. It's better than having the item gèt broken or having to go the the ER.

Honestly, I never thought that someone would have a problem with me moving things out of reach and at this point if I noticed it bothered the host than I probobly wouldn't come back until my daughter was old enough to understand more.

Can you bring a pack and play for your child to hang out in? I think it's a parent's job to watch their kid like a hawk and constantly discipline them not to touch things.
