Need advice about moving/signing DS up for K
OK, long story short, FIL owns the house next door to his. Needs lots of work. We decided to move into that house, fix it up etc. Before we could do that, Hurricane Sandy hit and wrecked it (on the water). Now it really needs to be redone. Problem is DS needs to be signed up for kindergarten for this upcoming September and registration is at the end of next month. There's very little chance we will be living there by September. How do we go about signing DS up for school in that district if we will not technically be living there when he starts school. Please help, I'm clueless:-Should I just call the school? I'm so scared my boy wont be able to start school where we want him to go.

Short answer... You can't. You have to show proof that you actually live in the district where you'll be sending your child. You need a utility bill, license, proof that you live within that district.
You should sign him up in the district where you currently live. You can easily transfer him when you move.

I'm with you. Sorry but if you want your son to go there, transferring mid year would be a pain. Given that Hurricane Sandy has displaced many families .... do you have any proof this is your home? If so I'd call and tell them the situation. It is your primary residence but due to unforeseen circumstances it is unlivable.
some may suggest just using the FIL's address.. here that is highly frowned upon but happened a LOT during the recovery of Katrina. One family would get an apt or temporary housing in a great district and half the family's children lived with them (still do). Still its not well looked upon and it is against the rules

Ugh:(. This was what I was afraid of. I do not want to move him mid year. Ds is shy and doesn't do well with change. I'm so bummed.

Call the district. What's the worse they can tell you, no.

I would call the district and explain the situation~ I am sure there are plenty of kids in similar boats due to the hurricane.
My guess though was that if they do say okay, you will probably be responsible for transportation on your own. But I have no real basis for that except a hunch! lol

Thanks, yes, I def would not expect transportation from our current home. I'll contact them today.

Re: Need advice about moving/signing DS up for K
There must be a way around it bc I knew two famikies in my DD's preschool who have older siblings in the school district. They bought homes in the town and were renting a house in the next town while their homes were gutted and redone. It maybe that they owned the home versus renting. I would call the district annomously and ask. You might need a lease agreement and to put the utilities in your name but who knows.

I work in a school district. The district makes exceptions and yes, you would have to provide your own transportation if they approve it. Good luck!

My son's bus driver has to transport a lot of kids who were displaced from the storm - she drives them to the same school they've been going to. So it is possible to get transportation but I'm not sure how it works.
As far as registering him, if you own the home and can show you own it, I don't think they'll have a problem with you not living there at the moment due to Sandy damage as many people are in the same situation. But you will need to prove residency.

We can prove residency because we will have a lease agreement from FIL. I guess I can then get utilities switched over and on my license as well. Hope it works. I'm scared to call lol.
