How high is too high of a fever?
Ds started with 103 yesterday morning and broke in the afternoon down to 99 then went back up this morning to 104 and gradually fluctuated between 101 and 103. It just broke again now at 99.5 but I'm so worried that the fever is going to burn out his hearing or vision! Took him to the pedi this am and she said its not the flu, just a virus so gotta wait it out and to continue giving Tylenol every 4 hours. I showed her these little red dots on his skin and she barely looked and said its probably from a virus then she said bye and just left the room! My other friend said I could give Motrin but she didn't even tell me that. Just to go back again if ds doesn't get better in a few days. Again, when is that? so frustrated......
Eta: ds is 11 months

How old is your DC? I think Motrin is a no until 6 months. If you think your DC is not doing well, then get a second opinion and listen to your mommy instincts. I hope that your DC feels better soon.

Re: How high is too high of a fever?
my nephew just had a temp of 105.7 and he had a febrile seizure it went to 106 by the time they got him to the hospital. (he was positive for flu)
the closer a temp gets to 104, the more worried i tend to get.
motrin is a MUCH better option for a child over 6 months.

Re: How high is too high of a fever?
Fevers are dangerous if it is a high temperature over a prolonged period of time. When my DD had pneumonia she spiked a fever of 105.6 of course I threw her in the car and took her to urgent care. The doctors weren't terribly worried. I piggybacked Tylenol and Motrin and when that didn't work I gave her a lukewarm bath which finally brought it down.

Re: How high is too high of a fever?
DD was just sick right after Xmas. She started with a fever of about 101-103. On New Years Eve she was up to 104.4 and I nearly had a heart attack! Motrin brought it down to about 102 before I put her to bed. Fever finally broke in the next 36 hrs and out came the rash the following day - classic roseola. Unfortunately, you don't know it's roseola until after the worst is over.
A fever of 103 isn't too bad. Keep with the tylenol and motrin (i find motron works better anyway) and hope that it passes soon!

Re: How high is too high of a fever?
DS is 18 months old and his fever spiked at 105.3 today. I stripped him down to his onesie and called the pediatrician. He was in on Monday and the Dr said it was a virus, but a fever that high had me worried. It was just about time for another dose of Ibuprofen, so I gave him another tsp and put him in a lukewarm bath. In about 45 min it was down to 103, then an hour later it was 101. The dr said it is important to get the temp down but she was more worried about getting DS to perk up. If he didn't perk up I would have had to bring him in again.
