My DS is EBF. So was my DD.
I actually just tried banana last night and he loved it, just let him get a taste and he loved it.
I think I'm going to try oatmeal next few days.
I think my milk supply is dropping a bit and he isn't getting enough, I'm very upset by this, pumping and fenagreek don't seem to be helping. I really don't want to give him formula and confuse him, plus he hates the bottle , so I figured I'll start cereal ...
Thanks everyone.

I thought I was having supply issues and DD wasn't getting enough at 4 months also. I had her weight checked bc I was pretty distraught and she was gaining well. Turned out she was just ready to stretch out her feedings more and that's why she wasn't nursing well when I was offering it. If you're stressed there's no harm in making an appt. to check his weight and also discuss adding solids if you want.

My ped said we could start at 4 months. We waited until about 5.5 months, no special reason.

My ped said to start at 4 months. New research shows that children are less likely to get allergies if they are exposed to a variety of foods earlier. This is contrary to what we were told with my first (she's only 4). Then, they said to start at 6 months because of allergies. So interesting!

This really is so confusing!! Has anyone seen any research on this? I was set to start at ~6 mos with my LO, since that was the recommendation 5 years ago with my older DD.

I've never come across any research supporting this, the AAP recommends breastfeeding exclusively for 6 months, I don't see how introducing food before 6 months would be in keeping with this recommendation.

DD is FF and the ped recommended starting cereal at 4 months. I wonder if the recommendations change for BF vs. FF babies? He did mention that starting cereal at this age was not to give nutrition but to get her used to eating this way.

I wonder where your ped received this information because I am not aware of any studies, only under certain special situations (reflux for example) is early introduction of food necessary. Not attacking you at all, just wonder how a doctor can deviate from the AAP without citing a valid reason.

I agree. I don't get why so many doctors don't advise parents to follow the recommendation. At DD's 4 months appt. he said we could start solids if we wanted. I asked why I would if the AAP and WHO recommend waiting and he just said recommendations change back and forth over the years. When he went to med school it was 4 months, now it's 6 but it's not a big deal to start sooner. I still think they should inform parents of the current recommendation!

My ped had no issues with us starting at 4 months either and my DD had no digestive issues. However, she went from eating an 8 oz. bottle every 3-4 hrs to downing 9-10 oz and then screaming of hunger less than 2 hours later. She was insatiable. Problem was, it was too much formula in such a short span so she would puke half it back up and then be hungry all over again.

So we started with cereal and then went right into purees. And it made a HUGE difference. She dropped right back to 8 oz bottles and was eating only every 4-5 hrs. She just needed more food but not more liquid food. For her, introducing foods at 4 months was best.

The fact is, when it comes to babies everyone will get differing advice as to when you "should" do something but as parents we know our kids best and we know what they need regardless of any study or doctor. So it's great to follow guidelines but there is also something to be said for one's judgement as a parent too. Mommies know best. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon KWIM? Chat Icon

thank you. he seems to be gaining weight , he is actually "overweight"Chat Icon but he's been sooooo cranky this past few days, not like himself, thinking either he isn't getting enough milk or teething Chat Icon

I TOTALLY agree with you, the part about Mommy knows best resonates with me. We actually started DS on avocado at 5 months and change...he was hungry! It's one thing to do it because you know and feel your child needs it, another to do so simply because "ped said so". We know our babies best.

I have been giving DD oatmeal cereal since she was 3 months and 3 weeks. I mix either a fruit or a veggie with it and do a three day test on everything I give her. She's doing fine and loves to eat!! She is a big girlie, so her ped said it was ok when she was around 3 months...I chose to wait.
