Convertible carseat in the cold
When you switch them to the convertible carseat-what do you put them in (clothes-wise) to take them out to the car in cold weather like its been lately? We are almost at the point to switch him to the convertible but I have been putting it off because of the cold since I can at least put him in his carseat with a blanket, hat and the car seat cover over it.

Anthony has the Children's Place layered coat... it's a fleece underneath and then a coat on top. I have been keeping them unzipped from eachother. I run him out to the (already warmed up) car with both layers on and then take the top layer off for car rides. He keeps his hat on the whole time though.

Re: Convertible carseat in the cold
Thanks Maria! DS still fits in his infant seat b/c he's tiny but I figure he's going to be a year old soon. I need to start bracing myself for switching him. Im not sure where to get him a coat though-he's so tiny he's just barely in 9 month clothing! Most of his clothes are still 6 months!

Convertible carseat in the cold
I am dreading the switch too! We just bought the convertible and decided to test it out to make sure we are happy with the seat. What terrible timing that turned out to be! The other day I forgot the blanket and ended up covering her with the shopping cart cover. Yesterday we ran out and I had her in the carter's sherpa pram and she didn't complain at all and seemed nice and cozy with a fleece blanket over her. My bigger issue was when she fell asleep on the way home and what would have been an hour nap in the infant seat was a ten minute nap bc she woke up when I got her out of the car. DH will be putting the infant base back in the car tonight and we'll keep using that through the winter.

Same as PP - we have the Carter's pram.
She's still in her infant seat (and I still put her in it).

Re: Convertible carseat in the cold
DS is 2, so a little older... but, yeah its been a PITA!!! they're not supposed to wear their coats in the carseat with the straps- so I have to take that off when i strap him in. on days when its not super cold, i'll just run him out to the car really fast and have his coat with me. But days like today, theres really no avoiding putting his coat on and off Im a SAHM, so its REALLY annoying like today when i had a bunch of errands to run and have to keep taking his coat on and off. As far as while they're in the car- you can put their coat on backward. SO like strap them in, then turn their coat around so you can put their arms through, but the coat part still keeps their upper body warm....

She wears the Lands End Squall jacket- thin enough for the car seat- you do NOT want any bulk in there- very dangerous. Yet super warm- rated to the negative digits I think You can also throw a blanket over them once they are strapped in.

Convertible carseat in the cold
DD is 5 and I have never put her in the carseat (of any type) with a coat on. She wears the coat from the house to the car, gets in the car, takes off the coat & gets put into her 5pt harness seat. In the cold weather she uses a blanket with her hat & mittens.

DS wears a fleece with a heavy coat over it to the car. Then the coat comes off and he just has the fleece for the car ride plus a blanket.

THIS - DS has been in the convertable for almost 2 months now (hes almost 8 months) sometimes i also put a warm sweatshirt/light jacket on him and wrap him in a warm blanket and put a hat on him when i take him in and out, this way he doesnt get strapped in too bulky and is still cozy. then i tuck the blanket around him when hes strapped in

Convertible carseat in the cold
It's super annoying but they wear hoodies with their heavy winter jackets over them when we go outside from the house to the car and from the car to wherever we are going. Once they get in their carseats, i have the car warmed up, i take their heavy jackets off and then buckle them up so they are just in their hoodies. Their hoodies aren't thick, but they seem pretty warm. It's annoying but i'd rather be safe than sorry.

Re: Convertible carseat in the cold
I make sure her hat and mittens are on and then her fleece zip up jacket. It's thin but very warm. Champion brand. She's always warm when we take it off once inside. I was dreading this from last year when it was so easy in the carrier but it hasn't been too bad.

Re: Convertible carseat in the cold
I have been wondering about this myself. DD is 7.5 months and is still in the infant seat. I am determined to keep her in it through the winter just to make it easier to keep her warm. She isn't anywhere even close to the height or weight limit, just heavy for me to carry. I would love to start using the City Mini when we're in stores, so that she can look at everything, but for now we keep using the snap n go because it's just more convenient to leave her warm and toasty in her carrier in this weather.

I would just bundle her up and leave the coat on backwards (as suggested above). We drapped a blanket over the bottom part of her and she was cozy. We always auto started and warmed the car up first. Now in TX (yes we get freezing here) I have the car in the garage so that helped. We would crack our garage door and auto start the car (in the apt days). Now in the house the garage is so close so we just go straight in and keep her bundled. Its chilly but not as bad.

I use a thin fleece jacket with a puffy vest over it and take the vest off once she's in the car. I find it easier to put on and take off a vest verses a jacket.
