My girls are 5 years old and 6.5 years old(both are 75% for height and weight) and still in 5 point harnesses. We don't plan on making the switch with either of them anytime soon.

a lot of booster have 5 point harness... DS is turning 3, we are getting him a carseat that converts to booster and playing it by ear. He's very tall 3 year old.

You can't use an actual booster seat until DC is at least 4 years old and 40 lbs. There are seats that convert to a booster (Graco Nautilus, Britax Frontier). They start out as 5 pt harness seats and can be used as a booster once DC meets the minimum requirements.
We just ordered the Britax Frontier for DS who's 4. He's not 40 lbs yet, but even if he were, he'd still be using it as a convertible.
