Opinions on NT sono please.

I'm 9 weeks and need to make a decision if we want to get the NT screening or not. DH is against it would rather not stress during the pregnancy and deal with whatever may happen when the baby is born.

I'm reading more about the screening and it says it can check for some heart defects. My question is - if you find out there is a heart problem can they do anything to fix it at this point?

Any other suggestion on why you're for or against the NT screening would be great!

Yes, it's not anything more than an ultrasound and bloodwork so I chose to have it both times. I didn't opt for amnios though.

I had the NT Scan done with my son and again for this pregnancy. I honestly couldn't imagine not doing it. It's a non invasive test that will give you peace of mind and an opportunity to see your little baby... it's an amazing experience!

Your DH's reason not to have the NT scan is exactly why we had it! Most babies are healthy and the NT scan will confirm that. Why worry if you can find out early on that everything is ok?

We did it and wish we didn't .
Our results came back higher than average person my age but not at risk. So I basically worried and cried for a few weeks . My belief is if your aren't going to terminate God forbid something is wrong with the baby then it isn't worth the stress . GL

Re: Opinions on NT sono please.

We did. We decided before hand it didn't really matter the results and that we would not do an amnio. The test isn't invasive and honestly, my doctor told me my risks were super low since I'm only 27.

I guess I can see both sides, it's a decision to make as a unit. Hubby and I both agreed that it was really simple and there wasn't any reason to pass it up.

NT scan is more detailed than any other ultrasounds. It might be another chance to see your LO but is really a total different experience! good luck on deciding!!

Re: Opinions on NT sono please.

It's as simple as this .. People who did it and got good results will tell you to do it... People who did it and got bad results and the results were accurate, will probably also tell you to do it... People who skipped it for their own personal reasons will convince you why you should do the same... And people who did it and the results were inaccurate and caused immense worry will try their hardest to persuade you why it's a terrible idea.

Ultimately, you need to decide what you are most comfortable with. The stats here are that for MOST people the results are fine. For SOME people they are not fine but are not accurate in the end, and for the rare few unfortunately, the results are deemed 100% accurate and baby is not well. MOST LIKELY your result will be fine, especially if you are on the younger end, though I have no idea of your age. Personally, I would not pass up on opportunity for a detailed sono and more information about your baby.

Besides, there's A LOT more to worry about than the NT scan. We found complications with my first baby that were unrelated to anything they ever even look for because it was so rare. Like it or not ... any sono is an opportunity to find out unfavorable news whether it's officially given a name or just called a routine appointment - which is basically what mine was. You won't turn down sonos the rest of the pregnancy, right?

Good luck!! Chat Icon

Opinions on NT sono please.

I opted out. I was 38 when I had my DS and knew the results had a good chance of being poor based on my age alone. I did not need to have weeks of worry. I knew I was going to have an amino anyway

My sis had it and her results were very bad. Like 1 in 4 or something close. She scrambled to get the cvs test done. Her son is perfect. For us it just wasn't worth the stress over a test that isn't really telling you mor than " your baby might have xy&z ". Maybes and mights are something I don't want as test results.

We didnt do it for any of my PGs (3). It was a personal decision, knew that it wouldn't chance anything for me and what they saw at the 20 week Level II would be enough info if anything additional planning was needed due to abnormal results.

I dont think there is anything wrong with the test and you have to make your decision without worrying about what others think.

ITA with this. We allowed the bloodwork to be done as well as the sono but declined to get the results. It's been a long road to get here and both DH and I would never terminate regardless of what they found. I am refusing cvs and amnio as well... That being said the only reason we allowed the bloodwork and sono to be done was because my perinatalogist told us he could find out more info about the placentas which could help later on in pg. I agree word for word. Had it done for both pregnancies; it never crossed my mind not to do it.

Re: Opinions on NT sono please.

I've had it for all my pregnancies at 12 weeks. Nothing came up that something was wrong. At 20 weeks with my first DS, I had my Level 2 sono and was told that the baby's brain and stem had not formed properly. He would not survive in the world, and possibly not even until full term. I had to give birth to that baby and let him go. I was told, that the doctors should have seen it at the 12 week sono, and usually it is detected. With my 2nd DS, at the 16 week bloodwork, it came back that he possibly had Trisomy 18. This of course sent me into being a lunatic where I had to wait until 20 weeks again to have more testing and a sono (everything was fine-thank goodness).

What's I'm trying to get at, is if a test earlier in your pregnancy, as in the 12 week scan, will allow you to know if something is wrong so you can deal with it earlier than later, I think it's better. Yes, tests are annoying and make you stressed and worried, but they are there for a reason. Think of it as the beginning of never being able to not worry about your little one again. Looking back, I wouldn't miss any of those tests now because it allows you to prepare for what lies ahead.

I only did it for the sono. I was not going to go any further with testing if anything came back abnormal.
