Clothing size and ages- a general idea
I'm trying to get a general idea of clothing sizes in regards to age for an average sized baby.
DS is average size- at 2 months he's wearing 0-3 months, fits great (although pants can be a little big).
For the most part, did you notice your DCs clothes correspond with the sizes (ex: wearing 6 mo when they were 6 months and wearing 9 mo when they were 9 months?).
I know its impossible to predict but I want to take advantage of sales as much as possible! So I figure if I have a general idea I can plan ahead.
It's strange because at my shower people bought sweaters in 9 months AND bathing suits in 9 months!

Clothing size and ages- a general idea
I think it depends on the brand... Gap runs large, carters, true to size

Re: Clothing size and ages- a general idea
DD started wearing 6months at 3 months old. She is a bigger baby. I figure she will be in 9 months by 6 months, but that is just a guess.

Yes, this. It also depends where your child falls on the growth chart. My first was always small, from 4 months till about 2.5, he was in the 5th percentile. So, obviously, he was never in the size that matched his age. My second, however, has always been right around the 50th percentile and has always worn the exact size for his age.

Depends on the brand and child. I have always taken advantage of the sales and bought for next year. That being said. For next winter i am buying mostly 18 month sizes for next winter. My child is 2.5 months now and just moving into 3-6 month old clothing.

It depends. DD is 7 months and wears 12 months. She has always measured over the 95th percentile.
I can tell you that Carters has an open return policy so if you get things now just keep them with the receipt in the bag and you can return them if they don't fit.

DS always wore double his size.
By 3 months he was in 6 months 6 Months he as in 12 months 12 months, he was in 24 months.
Now at 16 months, he is still in 24 months but I buy him 2Ts going forward. His growth is just starting to slow down.

Re: Clothing size and ages- a general idea
Really depends- my DD was small and still is. She can still fit in some 18 month PJs she has- and she is 2.5. She will probalby be in 2T until well after 3 years old. I say she was a bit behind her age in the sizes.

Re: Clothing size and ages- a general idea
My first was large and was always in 3x his age until 2 years old, when he wore 4 and leveled off. My second is more true to size, but is always 1 size ahead (in 9 mos at 6 mos, etc).

Re: Clothing size and ages- a general idea
DD was always onto the next size 1 month before the tag said. So at 5 months she was in 6-9. Even now at 2 1/2 (3 in MAy) she's in some 3t/4t tops and 3t bottoms. The 2 t can fit her but are short sometimes and the 3 t can be a bit long.

DS is in the 90th percentile of weight and height .... he's 3 months old and now wearing 6-9 month clothes.
I think for average sized babies, the clothing fits as it's supposed to though

Re: Clothing size and ages- a general idea
People don't think about seasons when buying. They buy whats out there that is cute at the time. When I received clothes when dd was born, I laid everything out in piles according to size, figured out what size I would need according to the season we would be in and did a lot of exchanges and returns. I very rarely had unused clothes b/c I did it this way. Now that is due I was goignt horugh some boxes of clothes and from birth-18 months I pulled out 3 items that had tags on them.

Re: Clothing size and ages- a general idea
My kids always wore a size greater than age. At 6 months old, he was wearing 9-12 months. He's nearly 11 months now and wearing size 18 months.

Clothing size and ages- a general idea
DD is 25th percentile and usually wears things a little past the size indicated. She was in some 3 months things until 4+months and in 6 months until she was over 7 months. I would think an average size baby will be pretty true to the size stated.
I also figure going forward her size will change more slowly and she'll stay in a size longer which helps. Once they're at 12 months and bigger the range is 6 months instead of 3 (12-18 rather than 6-9 or 9-12) so they shouldn't be changing as often and clothes will more likely last through a full season or multiple seasons.

DS was pretty much I the correct size to age until 7 months or so. He started walking at 9 mon and his pants are always big since then. He is a string bean. At 13 mons now we are having issues cause his 12 mon pants fit in length but fall down cause his waist is tiny. His 9 mon pants fit in the waist but are getting short.

Re: Clothing size and ages- a general idea
Depends on the brand and the actual clothing. DS was 2 months premature. He's 10 months actual age (8 months corrected) and is just fitting into 9 month clothing. Some of the pants are still way to big for him, so some of his pants he's still in 6 month. Depends on the brand

The brand is a huge factor! I have a big boy.. He is 10 months old and wearing carters 18months (pants are a little long but 12 months are too short). Up until last month he was able to fit into a 6 month onsie we had from the gap! Ironically, I feel like old navy runs small so its really hard to predict what they will fit in!

Re: Clothing size and ages- a general idea
My kids have always been on the tall side so they needed the size larger in shirts so their sleeves reached their wrists. My DD is 3 years old and she wears a size 3T pants but a 4T shirt. My DD is in the 78% for height and 60% for weight. My son is in the 95% for height and he is 5 years old. He is in the 70% for weight. He wears a size 6 pant and a size 7 shirt. As an infant my son wore one size larger than his age as did my DD.

Thanks! I guess there is no formula (I didn't think there was). DS is 50%tile so I thought maybe he would fit the clothes true to size. I guess we'll see...

Depends on brand and how your child grows..when DD was born, we had to run out for Newborn stuff since no one bought any...then every 6 weeks like clockwork, she changed sizes...now it's leveled off a bit and she's 21 months..but now she's tall and a bit bigger...ftr, we find Carters large, gap true to size and old navy small to true..lol

Re: Clothing size and ages- a general idea
It really depends on the kid and the brand. And kids change their percentiles too. Both my kids were closer to 50%-ile their first year, despite being born closer to 5%-ile. Now they are both skinny and my older son is short.
As an example, my 3 year old wears 2T pants and even those are a bit long. He really could wear 25 months pants for length, but they are too tight. He wears 3T shirts which are also a bit long, but the 2T shirts are tight.
My youngest is 18 months, he can wear either 18 month or 25 clothes and 18 month pants. He has always been more true to size, but while 50%-ile-ish in height, he is only 15%-ile in weight.
