Yet another piece in the "feeding issues" puzzle for my DD.
DD had a swallow study done today, at the recommendation of the feeding therapist at Winthrop (who I highly recommend, BTW). Well, it turns out that she has a delayed swallow, and that liquid has been penetrating her airway. This penetration showed up on 90% of swallows, and the feeding therapist said that if it's about 60%, it's likely that she has been aspirating the liquid. It was also going into her nasal cavity. Her official diagnosis is dysphagia. It is so frustrating, because from the time DD was a newborn, I said that I thought that she was aspirating and getting liquid in her nose, because she always sounded congested after drinking her bottle. Her pediatrician said that it was likely just due to reflux.
We now have to thicken her bottles with rice cereal, and she barely took it tonight (which really isn't so different from any other night). It makes sense now that she drinks so little and that she loves her purees.
On one hand, I'm happy to have another answer, but on the other hand, I'm so upset that there's something else wrong. DD has been diagnosed with reflux and milk protein allergy, and is always gassy. I feel like every time we find "the answer" to her problems, the solution (medication, Neocate, etc.) doesn't end up helping. Hopefully, now that we're with a feeding therapist, things will improve, but I'm so sad for DD.
